PELZ PALETTE TC Sel. SS Finns outhustle Midland by Don Lawrence International hockey came to Midland Centennial Arena Sunday afternoon when the bantam team from Rauma-Lukka, Finland arrived to play the Midland Orchard Fresh Bantams. It started with the playing of the Finnish and Canadian national anthems and ended with a supper for both teams and their executive members. But. between the opening and closing ac- tivities was a display of some good hockey in which the Finnish team downed Midland 10-6. Rauma-Lukka was the first team to score and the only team to score in the first period. Jarmo Firberg scored with 6:57 left in the first period with Ari Tatila getting the assist. By the end of the first period, the Midland team were only down by one goal which is highly indicative of the calibre of play shown by the players during that first period. Rauma-Lukka took a two goal lead only 14 seconds into play into the second period with Firberg doing the honours for his team once again. Credit Petri Laaksomen received credit for the assist on Rauma-Lukka's second goal. The' Finn's third goal also came from Firberg a mere 45 seconds later unassisted. Altogether, Firberg scored six goals for Rauma-Lukka. Midland's Tom Hook put the home team on the scoreboard less than a minute later with a quick shot, Mike- Magloughlin and Owen Quilty assisting on the play. With 10:45 left in the second period, Rauma- Lukka's Juha Viranen put the Finns ahead three goals with Peltola Juha-Pekka assisting. Hook scored again for Midland with 9:04 left in the second period, this time Quilty and Dean Marcellus assisting. At 8:55 of the second period, Firberg scored his fourth goal for the Finns, Jussi Sahisalmi helping out on the marker to put Rauma- Lukka ahead 5-2. It only took 21 seconds for Midland's Mike Magloughlin to get the goal back though as he broke in on the Finns' goaltender and scored an unassisted goal to bring the score up to 5-3. For the next six minutes, Rauma-Lukka seemed to break down Midland's play, for- cing them to return to the usual techniques used in Canadian hockey. Midland began to shoot the puck in and follow after it instead of passing it in as they had been doing. During that time, Midland allowed four goals to be scored on them by the Finns. Rauma-Lukka's first goal of the four came from Firberg again, the assists going to Jussi Sahisalmi and Pekka Virtenen. Their next goal came from Ari Tatila who accepted a pass from Petri Kiuru and Jonne Puputti. The next two goals were scored by Harri Syria and Petri Kiuru respectively with Juha Viranen and Jari Lartonen assisting on Syrija's goal and Tapio Tahkoniami and Jonne Puputti assisting on Kiuri's goal. Midland's Dean Marcellus scored with 34 seconds left in the second period on a pass from Tom Hook and Marlon Geisler to make the score 9-4 for Rauma-Lukka. The third period had to be Midland's best as they held Rauma-Lukka to one goal while scoring twice themselves. Rauma-Lukka's goal came a little over one minute into the third period with Firberg scoring for his last goal, Juha Viranen getting the assist. Scores Owen Quilty scored for Midland with just over 10 minutes left in the garme on a pass from Mike Magloughlin. Ralph Seeman scored Midland's last goal with Tom Hook getting the assist on the play, that goal coming with 9:49 left to play. The game was close one with both teams missing scoring chances as the goaltenders fought it out in the nets with good playing being present in both ends. Darren Morrison and Peter Newburn shared goaltending duties for Midland while the position between the posts was filled by 'Tommi Rentenan and Marko Koivunon for Rauma-Lukka. The play was relatively clean with Rauma- Lukka getting seven penalties altogether while Midland received three penalties, all penalties being minors for two minutes each. Page 30, Wednesday, January 7, 1981 Mid-Pen midg etsstalemate Midland Major Midgets hockey team have earned themselves the right to stay in the finals for the midget division of the Regional Silver Stick Hockey Tournament by con- vineingly . defeating Penetanguishene Midgets Saturday in Midland Centennial Arena by a score of 4-2. Midland and Penetanguishene were playing very evenly throughout the first period but Midland took over for the most part in the second period. Up until that point, the score was tied at 0-0 and it stayed like that until the final six minutes in that period. Then, one of Midland's players got a two minute penalty for holding and an ad- ditional two minutes for unsportsmanlike _con- duct when he slammed his stick on the back of the net. Just before the first two minutes was up in the penalty, the steady Der ess oree of Penetanguishene paid off as Phil Cinq-Mars popped in the first goal of the game. Shawn LePage and Brian McReynolds got the assists on the goal. Once Midland had played off the penalty, they could get down to playing to score again and that they did. With 1:29 left to play in the second period, John Johnson accepted a pass from Ken Sandy to tie the score for Midland 1-1. Then, about a minute later. Midland took a one goal lead, Johnson doing the scoring again with Rick Rever getting the assist. The third period was an exciting one for both teams and fans alike as penalties cut down the numbers of players on the ice drastically. At one point in the final period, both teams were playing with three players on the ice, not counting the goalies. Midland's lead fell with 9:46 left in the final period as David Robillard scored unassisted for Penetanguishene on a long shot from just inside the blue line. Midland wasn't long getting the lead back though because they managed to score on a breakaway only one minute and a half after Penetanguishene's goal. John Walter was the player that put Midland ahead on that goal with credit for the assist going to John Johnson. Walter was chosen Player of the Game for his steady performance. With only 4:14 left to play in the game, Steve Bressette took a pass from Allan Whidden to make the score 4-2 for Midland. The win means that the two teams will face each other again tomorrow night in Midland Centennial Arena at 8:30 p.m. to decide the Grand Champion of the midget division. That game will be played because Midland had lost one game and Penetanguishene had not, being the division champions. Midland finished as the consolation champions.
