4. cen - ibrar fit ves Last December 20th-century technology came to the Reference Department when Midland Public Library acquired its. latest piece of equipment for the use of patrons. The department now owns a Dukane microreader, model 27A25. This will be good news to our local historians, genealogists and other users of archival materials, who until now have been travelling to Orillia, Barrie or Ste. Marie in order to read microfilmed in- formation. More than half the cost of the machine was defrayed through the generosity of the Lions' Club. the Rotary Club, and the Kinsmen. The Dukane reader will accept microfilm (reel) or microfiche (sheet film). At present the library is still dependent upon the in- terlibrary loan service for the software which is used with the reader. m1 } : rt, That is because we do not yet own microfilmed census records or microfilmed newspapers. However, as an aid for researchers in family history, the reference room has a catalogue fromt he Public Archives of Canada which lists all microfilmed census records from 1825 to 1871 inclusive, and these films are available through interlibrary loan. The reference room has a tiny collection of microfiches, most of it for the use of the reference staff. But among the microfiche holdings there is a preliminary inventory (or finding aid) on Commissions and Committees from the Archives of Ontario, which researchers might find helpful. With regard to future purchases we might mention that to an ever-increasing extent original works are being published on microfilm and not in book form at all. This is true in the field of education, to name just one example. These original works remain unavailable to students and researchers who have no access to a microreader. Now this library can offer our members at least the option of borrowing them through inter-library loan, and as budgets permit we will be able to buy them.
