Pepsi championships Howard going to provincials The rink of Glenn Howard of Midland will be competing for the Pepsi-Cola Junior Men's Curling championship this weekend at Windsor's Roseland Municipal Golf Course. Howard is an 18-year-old student at Midland Secondary School and he is joined in his rink by Paul Harbottle, Peter Mount and Tim Tully, all Midland area residents. Harbottle, Mount and Tully are away attending various universities right now, but they will be back for this weekend's competition. The four recently gained recognition when they won the Toronto Curling Association's Sun Life Junior Bonspiel with the first prize being a week long trip to Scotland during the March Break where - they will play a series a five exhibition games. Howard's rink was in the provincial competition last year as well but lost out in a tie-breaking playoff game with John Kawaia of Toronto. Kawaja's rink almost won the national championship but lost the game on the final shot of the match. Howard's toughest competition will by far be the rink of Nick Rizzo of Glencoe who won the junior title two years ago when he was competing for the Brant Curling Club. Also competing in this year's tour- nament will be Brian Gallant of R.C.M.P. Curling Club, Jeff Parsons of Unionville, John Base and John Brooks of Oakville, Ken MacDonald of C.F.B. Trenton and Mike Altenhof of Kingsville. Round robin play will begin Friday morning at 10:30.a.m. and the second draw will commence at seven p.m. the same day. Action Saturday will take place at 10:30 a.m.. 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Sunday's play will start at 9:30 a.m. and the final game will be played at 2 p.m. with a tie-breaking game at 7 p.m. Sunday night should one be necessary. During that tournament, all teams will be guests of Princeton Motel in Windsor. The game was scoreless throughout the entire first two periods despite a double penalty imposed on Midland late in the first period and a similar set of penalties incurred by the Midland squad in the middle period. Midland was _ shor- thanded early in the third period as well but this time, it worked to their advantage. They got in behind the Penetanguishene de- fence while they were putting on the press, Midland scoring to go ahead 1-0 only 2:30 into that period. Mike Larmand scored the goal for Midland with Tim Jenkinson getting the assist. Midland's fifth penalty wasn't as lucky for them though as Penetanguishene wo- rked their way in on the Midland net and tied the Midgets tie Creemore Midland Stoneleigh Minor Midgets came up with a 5-5 tie against Creemore Minor Midgets Friday night in Creemore Arena after a lot of exciting hockey action had transpired. The two teams will score and then went ahead with their second power play goal all while Midland was shorthanded. Then, it was Penetanguishene's turn to take a penalty and Midland's Larmand took advantage of this fact with a pass from Pat Bowers and Brad Wadge to even the score at 2-2. Only one minute later, Bowers put Midland ahead 3-2 with assists going to Larmand and Wadge. Bowers not only scored the winning goal but he also scored the insurance marker with 1:16 left to play in the game.
