ee ee a ie 9 ed 4 Shriners win Juvenile boys and girls volleyballers fare well Midland Boys and Girls Volleyball Teams fared not too badly in the Juvenile Open Volleyball Tournament this past weekend at Midland Secondary School. Midland Parlour Games Juvenile Boys finished third in their pool with four points. They were edged out by Guelph and Vaudreuil from Quebec with seven and five points respectively. Behind them were Carrefour from Quebec and Peterborough with two points each. Juvenile Midland faced Guelph in the first match of their round robin play, losing the first game 15- 11 but coming back to take the second game 15-12. Against Vaudreuil, Midland finished with two losses 15-3 and a close game 17-15. Their third match was against Carrefour and Midland took both games in that match 15- 13 and 15-6 In their final match, they played Peter- borough but lost both games 15-7 and 17-15, eliminating them from the playoffs. Russ Howard's rink still facing bad luck Russ Howard's curling rink of Midland seemed to have a bad day in the challenge rounds of Ontario Senior Men's Curling Cham- pionships in London, this past weekend. The winners of the challenge rounds go to the Ontario Cham- pionships. Because of cir- cumstances beyond their control, one member of the rink was unavoidably detained and couldn't make it to the curling rink before the third end. That meant that the Howard rink was down 3-0 before they even started their game with Rusconi of Toronto due to late penalty points. Neither rink scored in the fourth, fifth or sixth ends and Howard's rink came back to tie the game by driving home a point in the seventh, eighth and ninth ends. But fate stepped in Coach Rick Presse blamed their slow start for their losses and stated inconsistent serve reception caused a lot of their problems. Among their strongpoints was their blocking as led by Chris Weissflog, Jeff Dunn and Vince Deschamps. Their setting im- proved greatly over the course of the tour- nament with Paul Cox, Brian Quesnelle and Tim Trewin doing the work there. Presse was especially pleased with the im- proved play of the again as the Rusconi rink of Toronto drove home three points in the last end. In their second game, Howard's rink played to a 7-6 loss with Morrisey of Sarnia in a match that went 11 ends before Morrisey eventually took the lead. Howard's rink, made up of Larry Merkley, Steve Strong and Ken Carstairs played well and deserved to win but luck was just not simply with them. Knapton is un- derstandably not op- timistic about this season but he does stand firm on the thought they will last the season, adding, "that's our main goal." Midland Athletics have been plagued by falling numbers in players able to show up for games, their deadline already having passed for signing more players.
