{ = bv Dave Chalmers The Midland Gervan & Jones Minor Atom hockey team extend a hearty congratulations to Mr. Brian Orser for his magnificent per- formance and well deserved championship McQuirter's takes McQuirter's Real Estate Atom hockey club of Midland Minor Hockey earned the nickname, "The Spoilers" Saturday in Midland Centennial Arena as they took away at the Canadian Figure Skating Championships, Sunday. While Mr. Orser was securing his title, the Gervan & Jones Minor Atoms were in Creemore battling to a 7-3 win-in their last A. E. LePage's first place hold in that league by defeating them 3-1. Scott Dion, Craig Pattenden and Jeff Beauchamps all scored singles for McQuirter's with Dion, Pattenden meeting of the regular season with the Creemore Atoms. The Midland crew figured the outcome of the game would be automatic after whipping 33 goals by Creemore in their past three encounters. However, such was not the case as Creemore was deter- mined to give an all out effort as they opened the scoring after Midland fumbled around in front of their own net with the puck before Creemore banged it home. Gervan & Jones rebounded quickly to tie the game as Greg Lalonde found the mark and the period ended at one apiece. Midland started the spoils in 3-71 victory and Steve Maurice getting assists. Shane Nichols scored the lone goal for A. E. LePage. Also in that league, Georgian Bay Real Estate came up with Bell Canada Atoms play Is connecting Midland Bell Canada Maior Atoms hockey club's play was right on Sunday in Midland Centennial Arena as they blanked -- Base Borden 4-0. Their strong passing game and positional plav was outstanding and they combined that with good defensive work inside their own blue line. Brad Larmand scored Midland's first goal at 5:14 of the first period with a Donny Montieth getting the assist. Mike Larmand put Bell Canada ahead 2-0 at 6:30 of the first period and he was assisted by Glen Weatherall on that goal. Mike Larmand scored his second goal of the game early in the second period, Montieth and Tim Jenkinson assisting on the play. Jenkinson and David Birkett assisted on Midland's fourth goal with David Merkley getting the goal in the second period. The third period of the game was scoreless, John Gibson in net for Midland Holding off Base Borden despite their first win of the season as they downed O. K. Johnson Travel 2- 0. Winteramatourney set The ninth annual Penetanguishene Winterama Senior Boys' Basketball Tournament will be held at Ecole Secondaire Penetan- guishene Secondary School Saturday with a 9:30 a.m. start. To be eligible for the tournament, players must be under 20 years old as of Sept. 1, 1980 and they must bring two contrasting sets of tops for the tournament. Entry fee for the tournament is $30 and both finals will be run under regulation time. All others will be six Elmvale 100 raises $4,300 Last Sunday's Sno-doo 100 was a roaring success as, compared to last vear's pledges, more than $4,300 was raised for the Elmvale and District Lions Club community projects. According to Ruby Hocken, 27 riders took part this time around and all completed the 100 km. run by 4 p.m. Top money pledged was held by Stan Furlong of Elmvale who took to the route with some $673 in total pledges. "The money was good this vear", said Mrs. Hocken, as riders hit the trail with total pledges averaging approxim- ately $150 per rider. Three riders set out with over $400 and one (Furlong) with over $500 in pledges. The group of local riders was joined at the start by two passersby from Welland Ontario, who. after riding the route were so im- pressed, promised to return with a group for next vear's run. Penetanguishene and Midland will start things off at 9:30 a.m. and Barrie North and Parry Sound will keep the action rolling with a game at 10:30 a.m. Base Borden and Georgian Bay Secon- dary School will play at 11:30 a.m. and Eastview and Huntsville will hit the courts at 12:30 p.m. The winner between Penetanguishene and Midland will play the winner between Barrie North and Parry Sound at 1:30 p.m. while the winners of the matches Home Maintenance between Base Borden and Georgian Bay Secondary School and Eastview and Hunt- sville will play at 2:30 p.m. The consolation championship will be plaved at 8 p.m. with the championship round being decided at 6:30 p.m. Albert McFarlane was in net for Georgian Bay and that was his first shut-out for the year. Jory IDA was plagued by illness in their game against Midland IGA which put three of Jory's players out of the game and handed them a 5-1 loss. One of those three players was Michael Worth, their goaltender and he was replaced by Matt Gervan who filled in between the posts, allowing only five goals. despite his inexperience in that position. Scott Parrell scored a goal for IGA while Chris Quesnelle got a pair of goals. Scott Bell and Trevor Irvine each scored one Assists were received by Kirk Maheu and Doug Cave, Parrell getting two assists. Jorv's scorer was Mike Lafreniere. Action will resume Friday in Midland Centennial Arena at 5:20 p.m. when Jory's IDA will take on A. E. LePage. Georgian Bay Real Estate will play McQuirter's Real Estate at 6:15 p.m. and Midland IGA _ will chalienge O. K. Johnson at 7:10 p.m. second period with a goal by Andrew Bowers but to no avail as Creemore tied the game as the teams rushed from end to end with Midland missing the lions share of op- portunities. Midland managed to close the second period with a one goal lead as Gary Moore slipped one in after some nifty stickhandling inside the Creemore blueline. Midland goaltender Steve Duncan held Midland in the game until the second period ended and _ Coach McLaren delivered an enthusiastic explana- tion of which end of the rink Midland should play the final period. With this explanation under their belt the Gervan & Jones crew clicked in the opening seconds when Andrew Bowers zipped in a pass from Jess Perrault and the team started to roll. # Greg Lalonde blasted a shot at the Creemore net and Scott Bales was in position to rap in the rebound to spread the margin to three. Lalonde fired his second goal of the game and 37 seconds later, David Chalmers whipped a pass from Sean Lunnie into the net. Suddenly the score was 7-2 for Midland and the situation was well in hand, although Creemore did manage another goal with less than two minutes remaining in the game. With a five goal edge, the Midland squad controlled the puck for the remainder and secured their 7-3 win.
