Na NE ~Waverley School House by Adrienne Graham Gardner The rejuvenated Waverley School House has successfully completed its second full year in operation as a community centre -- in the black. Treasurer Hilda Sibthorpe reports, after balancing expenses of $23,018 against receipts, the community centre is left with a healthy $543 in the bank. There are several successful fund-raising activities sponsored by the Waverley School House over the year, including a "silent auction', a bar-b-que, and a moonlight boat cruise. A newsletter publicizing events at the community centre is printed quarterley and is self-supporting through advertising Port McNicoll revenues. People from all parts of the county attend functions at the School House in Waverley, which is conveniently located in the geographical centre of the area. Townships The four townships of Tiny, Tay, Flos and Medonte each contribute $500 annually to the community centre, since they all border on the hamlet of Waverley and their residents take advantage of the new facility. Maior expenses at the centre have included general renovations, the purchase of equipment such as chairs and tables. Utilities consume a large part of the annual budget, with Hydro costs running $742, and Oil for the furnace at $2,228. Over the last summer, a Young Canada Works grant employed five local students to redevelop the ball diamond in Waverley and do inside work on the school house such as refinishing floors. Revenues in the coming year will go toward repainting of the exterior of the building, general maintenance and more tables and chairs. The furnace will have to be replaced in the near future as well. Recent events at the community centre have included a display of the Canada Packers Quilt Show to which over two hun- dred people travelled from all across the province. Childrens' dance classes, fitness classes, upholstery courses, gymnastics and Friday night card parties are on-going through the winter. The building, with kitchen facilities is also available for rent for meetings and gatherings such as anniversaries. The large rooms were in great demand over the holiday season for Christmas and New Year's parties. Presentation An evening presentation by the Ontario Provincial Police on causes and prevention of vandalism was held recently at the centre. In the two short years since the old school house was restored through a Canada Works Grant it has once again taken an active role in the community. Brightly painted, efficiently managed and staffed by friendly people the centre is attracting a growing audience of supporters from the entire Huronia area.
