Coach of the week is Tom Garner, coach of Midland Centennials Jr. C hockey club. Midland Centennials overcame a great obstacle this past week to advance on to semi- final hockey action in Georgian Bay Jr. C hockey. They were fighting the establishment of Penetanguishene Kings as resident cham- pions, not only in this area but also in the entire league. Penetanguishene Kings have finished in the top spots for the past four years and have taken the league championship three times in their four years of formation. However, as Garner says, that's all changed now and the Centennials are now on top. having dethroned the Kings from the leading spot in the area. Garner says he knew they had to win the best of five series in four games and that they did. In fact, when he found out that the Kings manager, Peter Dubeau had chosen the Midland Centennials as the club they would face in the playoffs first, Garner got on the team bus and announced they were going to beat the Kings in four games. The team members' reaction was a mixture of excitement and wonder. really could do it as Penetanguishene 8-3. But Garner sat down and analyzed what he ji had seen on the ice and he came up with a plan that effectively shut down the Kings' scoring plays. Midland Centennials outshot the Kings in every game of the series and the Kings just couldn't seem to match the Centennials' play. In the final game of the series, Midland won 7-6 in overtime after losing a 6-3 lead late in the third period. Garner says he was praying they would be able to come out of the third period with a 6-6 tie, so it seems a coach may need a little more just a well-rounded knowledge of than hockey. Midland Centennials are definitely up for the semi-finals against Parry Sound Shamrocks and they owe it all to positive thinking and the man that gave them that power was Tom Garner. Because of Tom Garner, hockey may just in the Midland- Penetanguishene area for as Garner states, take on a new look "The King is dead!"
