Religious ed. committee report The Religious Education Committee of the Simcoe County Roman Catholic Separate School Board met on Feb. 23 and again on March 11, primarily to discuss the evaluation components of the Canadian Catechism and _ to propose further Focus on Faith for the Future (F.F.F.) activities for the R.C. board for the balance of the school year At the first meeting the chairman reviewed the activities of the committee over the past year for the benefit of new members. She explained that the committee had _ un- dertaken a summer 1980 studv of the Grade 8 catechetics course content. It was agreed that the programme was a very worthwhile and com- prehensive year of studv and contained a large component of explicit teaching relative to the Sacraments, grace, the Church, liturgical seasons, etc. which had been areas of concern. The teaching strategies were, un- derstandably, a little different from traditional methods of catechesis and _ the committee felt a certain urgency in getting this explanation to parents. Thev urged again that newsletters and general communications from school should often include reference to the religion programme so that parents could reinforce the concepts taught in the home setting. Such references would be a constant reminder to all of our unique "raison d'etre", R.C. board trustees were told Wednesday. At the second meeting, officials brought some correspondence from the Catholic Office of Religious Education (C.O.R.E.) to the at- tention of the com- mittee. It described the preparation of new teachers in the education facilities in the universities which serve the archdiocese, and outlined in detail the staffing and cost of the programme in religious studies for Catholic student teachers. The financing in the past few years has been somewhat informal and boards are being invited to donate cash or staff to the venture on a prorated enrolment basis. A breakdown of the financing proposals is appended to this report. Messieurs John Prokopich and Art Coates (Monsignor Lee Grade 8 teacher) were invited to join the committee members at the second meeting to discuss their per- ceptions and strategies in assessing outcomes of the religion program- me. Religious conviction and deep faith act as a rudder which maintains direction in spite of the storms and buffeting of life. Both stressed the need to go beyond simple intellectual- assent to church teaching and offered ample illustration of the current involvement of students in living out their faith in the com- munities of Simcoe Countv. This component of the program is, of less amenable to direct evaluation and testing. A number ot assumptions about Religious Education Evaluation, which had been drawn up by the superintendent of schools and the religion consultant, were distributed to com- mittee members. _ It was hoped that these would form the junction with the June 17 board meeting. The committee will meet again on May 27, to plan a Day of Recollection for the fall. initiatives, the com- mittee considered it appropriate to propose another end-of-the-year celebration of the Eucharist in con- basis for the future discussions in this area.
