The eight-end affair has been held in Midland for the past 40 vears and featured 28 rinks from Club. The Midland rink of Jim Shaw took the fourth event with other Midland rinks placing second and third in the other three events. Midland was way ahead with its Bellsystem There have been moments through the years when Midland has been way ahead of its time. The year 1880 was no exception. On April 29, 1880 The Bell Telephone Company of Canada was_ incorporated and the company's first long distance line was erected from Toronto to Hamilton. In 1880 Midland's first telephone was installed in a bakery owned by H.S. Ruby. Mr. Ruby came to Midland from Barrie to set up his business. The telephones were "acoustic" and were set up for communication between Ruby's bakery at the corner of Midland Avenue and Hugel Avenue east and his bake shop located two blocks away. The connection was made of iron wire stretched bet- ween two fibre diaphragms. The line had to be perfectly straight and free from contact of any _ kind. Primitive bells were rigged up over the apparatus at each end. These would ring when the instrument was given a good shake. Midland's first telephone exchange was opened in 1886 when a long distance line was constructed between Penetanguishene and Midland. It took four miles of iron wire and three miles of poles to complete it.
