The project actually will get off the ground on three fronts. April 1 the chamber will be hosting a meeting in an at- tempt to start up a merchant's association. Plans call for launching a folder enabling visitors and residents alike to take walking tours of the town with about 20 stops on the agenda. -- That scheme could start as Some observations ¢ OVER THE YEARS many ef us have taken the fire denartmen't in Penetanguishene for granted. It is worth noting the department is an all-volunteer brigade. The men connected with the brigade are extra special because they are volunteers because day or night in all kinds of weather they respond to calls for assistance. At some cost to themselves thev often risk life and limb in answering general alarms, in entering smoke and fire filled buildings. Yes we take Penetanguishene Fire Denartment and all area volunteer firefighting brigades for granted and we shouldn't. 2K OK OK KKK JUST WHEN it appeared Penetanguishene Police earlv as May. Also April 22 has been set aside in the hope of raising interest in the town for the formation of a Business Improvement Area (BIA) in Penetanguishene. The three projects have much merit and we are hopeful all three will not only get off the ground but will be the catalyst in attracting more visitors and shoppers to Penetanguishene. - Penetanguishene Chamber of Commerce wins our ad- miration for its imagination in spear-heading these projects. Department was getting back to some semblance of order since former police chief John Geere resigned, the force is now involved in yet another personnel matter. It is our hope it can be resolved as a result of being properly dealt with under regulations contained in 'the Police Act. a It is not the first time a matter like this has cropped up within P.P.D. the past year or so. but we would hope it will be the last. KKK KKK AND WE were pleased to learn Maple Valley Club in Tinv Township has_ been granted a licence from Tiny to hold the club's third annual Country Grass, Festival, July 10-12 The green light was given upon the same _ sanitation, safetv and liability conditions as previous festivals. Dear Sir: The Times of 18 March reported the answer of candidate Fayne Bullen to "a question about abortion"' at the All-Candidates' Meeting. Since the auestion was asked by me, and the meeting rules made it difficult to pursue the question, and since Mr. Bullen chose a drastic answer, may I now explain. The Canadian Federal Law classifies abortion as a crime except when it is done to save the life or health of the mother. This law is administered by the provinces. In 1979 there were 69,000 known abortions in Canada. In this day of affluence and modern medicine, could 69,000 Canadian women need an abortion to save their health? This is not believable. It is clear that in Canada abortions are being given 'for the social wish and even the con- venience of the mother,"' as a group of Canadian phvsicians has recently affirmed. The question then to candidate Bullen was, if elected. what will you do to reduce this killing of babies before birth, which is evidently against both conscience and the Law? And the Times printed his answer: Leaves it to the conscience of the woman and the doctor. Now this is equivalent to legalizing abortion on request. The NDP, the party of the poor, of the little man, of abolition of hanging, has decided to leave the killing of unborn babies to the private decision of mother and doctor. Who could be smaller or more defenceless than an unborn baby? Who would need more the protection of law? And yet Mr. Bullen says that a law forbidding abortion (i.e. protecting unborn babies) is "playing God"'. Would he abolish the laws against murder and infanticide as well, because that too would be plaving God? Our NDP man answered other questions quite College reunion planned Dear Sir: St. Jerome's College at the University of Waterloo is planning its first Alumni Reunion. All graduates of St. Jerome's College as well as those University of Waterloo graduates who have lived at St. Jerome's or Notre Dame College are invited to attend. The reunion will take place on June 5, 6 and 7 on the University of Waterloo campus. Graduates who are interested in attending the reunion should contact Ken Lavigne, Registrar, University of St. Jerome's College, Waterloo, Ontario. N2L 3G3. Sincerely, K. A. Lavigne Registrar well that evening. But his answer to abortion was a sad one. Can Conservatives or Liberals do better? Can we find in our hearts the respect and compassion we need for our unborn children? Sincerely, (Rev.) Stephen Somerville Heart fund results encouraging Dear Sir: 4 "Heart Month" in Canada is now over for another year and on behalf of the Canadian Heart Fund, Ontario Division, please accept our heart- felt thanks for your promotional support during February 19?1. Our objective for the 1981 "Heart Fund" cam- paign was $7 million and although all returns are not vet in, we are quite hopeful that cur objective will be attained. Without your willing co-operation in communicating our needs to the public,. we would not be able to express such a positive outlook. The Medical Committee of the Ontario Heart Foundation, met at the end of January to review research applications submitted to us for support. You will be pleased to know that after deliberations, $7.4 million has been committed to cardiovascular and cerebrovascular research projects in Ontario, commencing July 1981. The financial support of many individuals and businesses in our Province, has made this com- mitment possible. Thank you again for your support, and for helping us to ensure that research against our nation's number one health enemy will continue. With best wishes.
