Effective speaking: by Eileen Hocken Port MecNicoll Lions Club hosted its first Effective Speaking Contest on Friday, April 3, at the Port MeNicoll Public School. Jim Zummach was ap- pointed chairman for the evening's activities. Pat Armstrong, the president of the Lions Club. was called on to sav a few words. He welcomed the parents and guests and thanked the contestants for taking part in the public speaking. There were 10 con- testants, two of which ere French-speakers from Ecole Secondaire Le Caron. The speakers, five voung ladies and five voung men, were judged on a prepared speech which had tobe a minimum of five minutes and could not exceed seven minutes, and on a two minute impromptu speech. There were three judges. Shirley Whit- tington. Rev. Al Far- thing and Doug Haig, Q.C. who handles Port MeNicoll's legal mat- ters The young women contestants were as follows: Sheila O'Brien, Park Street Collegiate School. Orillia; Shauna Ferguson, Midland Secondary School, Midland; Margaret De Jong. Central Collegiate School. Barrie; Carol Allen. Elmvale District High School, Elmvale; Louise Cadeau, Ecole Secondaire LeCaron, Lafontaine. The voung men were; Andy Jones, Midland Secondary School, Midland; Jeff Van de Kleut. Orillia District Collegiate and Vocational School, Orillia: Cal Potts, Elmvale District High School. Elmvale; Layne Verbeek, Central Collegiate, Barrie; Pierre Lamoureux, Ecole Secondaire LeCaron, Lafontaine. Contestants were judged on the material and delivery of their speeches which took in selection of subject, organization of material, interest, language and changes of rate, pitch and nme, eye contact, gestures, posture, clearness of speech, enunciation, pronun- ciation, fluency and general' effect on audience. District Chairman of Effective Speaking, John de Crombrugghe, announced the winners of the contest. Jeff Van de Kleut of Orillia was over-all winner and received the Trophy. In the boys' division, runner-up was Andy Jones of Midland. The first place winner in the girls' division was Margaret De Jong of Barrie. Her runner-up was Sheila O'Brien of Orillia. First and second place winners will be competing in another Effective Speaking Contest at the-Midhurst Community Centre on April 12. Those winners will then go on to Parry Sound on May 1 to compete with all of Ontario, Quebec, and Labrador winners. We congratulate Friday night's winners and wish them luck in future contests. Port McNiéoll Girl Guides had their first Cord Ceremony Tuesday, March 31. It was the first time in Port MeNicoll history for such an event. The Ceremony took place at Port MeNicoll Public School at one of the regular Brownie meetings so that those girls could take part and watch the happenings. The Area Com- misioner, Mrs. Shirley Rooney, was on hand to present cords, cord pins and certificates to two verv hard working Girl Guides. Leasa Perrault and Rennee Rioux. This cord is the highest honour a Girl Guide can receive and it takes three years of hard work to accomplish. Leasa has earned a total of 33 badges and 6 emblems. Rennee has earned 28 badges and 4 emblems. The two girls were presented with a corsage and a gift from their fellow Girl Guides. Tausuists os spye Crack Ceremony also saw six girls fly up from a Tenderfoot to a Girl Guide: Congratulations are extended to Allison Dorion, Terri-Ann Duval. Tracy Cadieux, Lori-Anne_ Kirdeikis, Stephanie Harris and Pattv Newlands. Badges were given to four other Girl Guides. Kim Burrage received her Cook and Hostess badges; Patty Newlands, her Hostess badge; Terri-Ann Duval. her Laundress and Cook _ badges; Colleen Kelly, her Photographer badge. Congratulations, girls. Brownie Leader, Lyn Haves. presented some girls with Puppeteer badges which they earned while in Brownies and hadn't yet received because the badges were late in arriving. Congratulations to Terri-Ann Duval, Lori- Anne Kirdeikis, Patty Newlands, Tracy Cadieux and Allison Dorion. Kempenfelt Bay District will host conference. bv Robin Nutbrown Kempenfelt Bay District will be the host of the 1981 Lakeland Regional Conference, which will be held on April 25 at Eastview Secondary School in Barrie. Following. the con- ference. a dinner and dance will take place at Georgian College. There is something for everyone in the sessions, displays, and overall pregram, and I'm sure you will have an enjoyable time. If you wish, there is an alternate program which will be touring Simcoe County Museum 'and Molson's Brewery, if that interests you. The cost of the con- ference is $5.00 per Page 12, Wednesday, April 8, 1981 Special thanks to the Girl Guides who did such a good job serving refreshments to the parents and guests and also to their young Brownie friends. A few Brownie Leaders took part in a Program' Training session at St. John's United Church in Vic- toria Harbour' on Saturday, April 4. The matter of dress uniform was brought up. and by order of Head Office, Toronto, Brownies and Girl Guides are to be in full uniform at all meetings. If the girls are not properly dressed, they must be sent back home. The parents of these voungsters are advised to make sure their children have full uniform and that they wear it. The Mothers' Group Committee will be meeting tonight, April 8, at 8:30 p.m. in the basement of Bonar Church. We _ would appreciate the mothers turning out for this very important meeting. On Wednesday, April 15, the Girl Guides will be un at Port MeNicoll's Javcee Park to play soccer. The last meeting of the C.W.L. (Catholic Women's League) until September was held Wednesday, April 1, after evening Mass in the Parish Hall of Sacred Heart Church. Due to the absence of Mrs. Leona Cavanaugh, the President of the C.W.I.. and _ other members of the executive, the meeting was presided over by Father Vincent Egan. Following the opening praver. several items of business were discussed, especially ~ plans for the evening reception on Wed- nesday, April 22. On that date the Sacrament of Con- firmation will be ad- ministered by Bishop Clune to a number of youngsters in the parish The meeting was closed with a prayer led by Father Egan. Port MeNicoll School held their Registration dav last Thursday. So far 25 children have been signed up but the school expects 30 or more children to start Kindergarten classes in September. About 90 children have -registered for baseball to date. Elsa Kovacs and_ Ross Cameron believe there will be more stragglers. Some kids don't think thev want to play baseball until they find person. If you prefer to stav for the conference, the dinner and dance, the fee will be $16.00 per person. The regional con- ference is geared for both leaders and their spouses.
