HCES News bv Chris Robertson and Kristin Roberts The Science Fair last week was a= great success and many winners were chosen. In the Primary Division, the winners were: Kathryn Elliott, Elizabeth Knuff, Robbie Conn. Alison Parnell and Mark Elliott. The Junior Division winners were: Andy Beardsall, Janice Parnell, David Beard- sall. Jenny Campbell and Brian Jackson. Intermediate winners were: Todd Faulkner, Chervl Parnell, Greg Withall, Tammy Hocken and Suzan Margison. Manv thanks to the judges who were: John Williams, Mr. Gray, Mrs. Simpson, Mrs. Locke. Mrs. O'Neill and Mr. Morgan. Mrs. Robertson's Grade One class was verv sad when they heard about Mr. Reagan in Washington. They drew pictures and worte stories about the tragedy. Mrs. Robertson and Mrs. Todd's children are all happy that Spring is finally here. Thev have been talking about signs of spring. Mrs. Tanner's Grade Two class is discussing maple syrup. Mrs. Willis' Grade 2 and 3 class is making paper mache birds to go along with their bird unit. Mrs. Willis is also collecting art projects for her May display. Craig Oro Unit of the Cancer Societv held a meeting in Crown Hill United Church on March 18. Campaign Chairmen, Garf and Annie Burton, had canvassing kits ready for the team captains from the Oro communities. Naney Drury, Oro Unit chairman, welcomed the workers and introduced the executive members in attendance. She also introduced Mr. Ed Tschirhart, Barrie Cancer Society president, and Mr. Jack Lambert, District Representative. Thev explained a gfreat deal about the work of the Cancer Societv, particularly in the area of care to patients. Mr Tschirhart pointed out that only three per cent of funds fathered are spent on operating costs. He felt . that greater assistance to patients and education can be given by the township bran- ches Mr. Lambert, too, mentioned the hope that even more people can be helped by the new smaller units. He stressed how very valuable is the work of the volunteer. He ex- plained the very wide range of service the societv provides. Mr. Lambert reminded us of the dedication of Terry Fox's Marathon' of Hope. All the money raised by Terry has gone into special research funds, chosen by Terry. All the regular ongoing projects of the Cancer Society require just as great an effort on our part to sustain the work that goes on from year to year. It is Terry Fox's earnest wish that the splendid response to his marathon will in no wav diminish the April Camnaign to which so manv lend their sup- port Oro Unit will receive their Charter at a meeting in Barrie on Monday, March 30th. Mr Allen has organized a track and field conditioning club. The HCES Band has three narades to attend, the Maple Syrup Festival, Bracebridge Lion's Club and the Wintario Draw in Elmvale. At the Huronia Parent-Teacher mee- ting on Monday the Gymnastic Club made a Science Fair a great success fine showing. The Primarv speakers had their speak-off that nigh! and the Uke Club plaved a few songs to entertain the parents as well Tomorrow, a dental nurse will be coming to the school to check all the children's teeth. On Friday, a lady will be coming to the school, to talk about the disease Multiple Sclerosis. Some of our pupils will take nart in a Read-A- Thon to raise money for this worthy cause. Mrs. Milne has a French Conference on Fridav All children going to Kindergarten in Sep- tember should register on April 8 at the school.
