by Eileen Hocken Wednesday, May 13, was an exciting day for Vie and Hazel Carpenter of Port MeNicoll, when they saw the 'Coffee Grinder', a 45-foot cedar-strip sailboat that took the couple 18 months to build, being launched. The Carpenters own and operate Superior Sailboats in Port McNicol. They have been in business now for close to 25 years. They are perhaps better known for the boat, "'The Golden Goose' which they built for. Gordon Lightfoot: Vic and Hazel have two men working for them, Willie King and Bill McCullough and three part-time students. Superior Sailboats is unique in that it is one of the few businesses still making sailboats out of wood. Most boatbuilders use fibreglass. The Carpenters are master craftsmen as evidenced in the sleek lines of the "'Coffee Grinder", the expert workmanship, the attention to even the most minute detail. The 65 feot mast is made of laminated bunks, is made of mahogany. Before being launched, the sailboat was christened, with Karen Carpenter doing the honors. Instead of the traditional champagne, coffee was used for the christening. No one thought to inform Karen of the switch and she received quite a surprise when she took a drink. For most of the day the sun stayed hidden behind clouds and the wind was . brisk and cold, but as if by magic, the skies Red letter day for 'Coffee Grinder' r spruce; the interior which includes 14 suddenly cleared to brighten the day considerably. We'd like to think this a good omen - a sign presaging a long life for the "'Coffee Grinder" and its owner. A hugh crane was put in place and the hoist straps carefully fastened around the sailboat, cradling it as it was carefully and gently lowered into the waters of Georgian Bay. It was 4.45 p.m. The "Coffee Grinder"' was launched with scarcely a ripple.
