Altogether 535 dogs were judged yesterday with an additional 515 dogs to be judged today. Day-long softball tourney Eight teams vie for $850 in prize money A total of eight teams will be competing all day Monday at the main King __ Street ball diamond in Midland during the Athenian Club's first annual men's softball tourney. Playing in the event will be Wyebridge, Coldweater, Perkins- field, Johnie's Pizza, Athenian' Raiders, Vasey Royals, Lercar Construction and Vasey Twin Lakes. Games will be five innings in length except for the final consolation and championship matches which will be seven innings affairs. The mercy rule will not apply in the final games but will be in effect in all other games with the game being called after three in- nings if one team is ahead by more than five runs. Each team will be paying a $75 entrance fee plus one new ball and will be competing for $850 in prize money. The championship team will collect $400 with the championship finalist getting $100. The consolation champio- nship team will win $200 with the consolation finalists claiming $75. There will also be a batting contest and a baserunning contest with the winner in the batting contest winning $50 and the winner in the -baserunning contest being awarded $25. The first game in the tournament will start at 9 a.m. Monday with Wyebridge and Cold- water going up to bat. After that, games in the first round of action will be Perkinsfield and Johnie's Pizza playing at-10 a.m., Athenian Raiders and Vasey Royals batting at 11 a.m. and Lercar Con- struction and Vasey Twin Lakes taking to the field at 12 p.m. The consolation round will get underway at 2 p.m. with the cham- pionship round starting at 3 p.m. The final consolation game will be played at 6 p.m. and the final championship game will start at 7:30 p.m. All 'teams are restricted to their signed players and will not be allowed an infield practice but may warm up in the outfield bet- ween games. Admission for the tournament will be $1 for adults with children under 12 years of age admitted free. Refreshments will be available at the tour- nament site. Invitational volleyball There will be a Class A and B Invitational Volleyball Tournament tomorrow at the outdoor courts in Little Lake Park in Midland. Teams of four, two men and two women, will be taking part in the tournament at a cost of $5 per player. Prizes will be awarded to the winners in both Class A and B with triples tournament play starting at 10 a.m. Another volleyball tournament in Little Lake Park will take place Aug. 9 and this will be for local players only. It will be a men's and women's tournaments registration fee of $3. Action will get under way at 12 p.m. with a Don Lawrence * Sports editor * The Midland Times Stewart's Oilers burying Diggers' hopes Stewart's Gulf Oilers of Penetang- Midland Senior Division Ball Hockey continue to be the big story this season, having won their second game in a row in semi-final playoff action with S. Charlebois Haulage and Excavating Diggers. Stewart's Gulf Oilers defeated S. Charlebois Haulage 4-3 Tuesday night in Penetanguishene Arena, their winning goal coming with only 3:22 left in regulation time. Without single loss S. Charlebois Haulage finished in first place in leage standings without a single loss in 18 games while the Oilers were fifth with nine wins, seven losses and two ties in 18 games. Scoring for Stewart's Gulf were Dennis Pelletier with a pair of goals, Kevin Dusome and Rob Huson each with singles. Goals for S. Charlebois Haulage were Peter Robillard, Mike Duval and John Larmand. Winning goaltender in that game was Craig Watson who faced a total of 30 shots on net while Bill Puddicombe stopped 22 shots on net for S. Charlebois Haulage. Stewart's Gulf Oilers were leading that series two games to none ina best of five event going into last night's action, the results from that game being too late for press time. Leafs leading series In the other semi-final series, Dupuis Groceteria Leafs also took a two game to none lead in their best of five series with Cumming-Nicholson Stompers by edging out the Stompers 3-2. Brian Pilon supplied a pair of goals for the Leafs while Terry King added their marker. Scoring two goals for the Stompers was Tom Graham with a pair. In net for Dupuis Groceteria was Mike Duquette who stopped 27 shots on net with Ed Diver facing 23 at the other end for Cumming-Nicholson. Dupuis Groceteria Leafs. are defending champions from the years 1978, 1979 and 1980 and finished this season in second place, while Cum- ming-Nicholson Stompers finished regular season play in third place. Action in that series continued last night as well in Penetanguishene Arena, those results too late for press time. running the program. by Ken St.Amant After the completion of our first four- week session of the summer gymnastics camp, I felt that I would take this op- portunity to look at the staff which is employed six students to operate and maintain approximately 160 gymnasts The Hurons have Penetang-Midland Gym Club News just completed Grade 13 at Ecole Secon- daire Penetanguishene Secondary School. This is her second summer on staff and her third year with the Huron club. Her ex- perience has been of great value to our coaching staff. Next fall Belinda is going to attend Georgian College in Barrie. She will be training to become a registered Anne- Ottawa. Claire Montgomery attends Grade 11 at Hillcrest High School in strong bymnastic background has been of great value to us. Last year in the Jr. division, she placed seventh in the Eastern Regional standings and was an alternate at the provincials. Another staff member that is back for a second summer with the Hurons is Brenda Spencer. Next year whe will be attending Grade 13 at Ecole Secondaire Penetanguishene Secondary School. OriginaHy a gymnast with the club, Brenda now has turned her talents to coaching. She is one of the members of our junior coaching staff. our coaching staff. For Tammy Therrien, this is her first summer working for the club. This former gymnast with the club now is a member of our junior coaching staff. Presently, Tammy is attending Grade 11 at Midland Secondary School. Her patience and determination has made a lot of young gymnasts very happy and proud. Last but not least, is Tami Finley. She is coaching staff that is very knowledgeable in the field of gymnastics. Our staff has a wide range of experience and are very eager to learn. We feel that our program is second to none.
