Twenty-three horses and riders from Cookstown, Barrie, Stayner and Midland competed in the 14 classes. Mr. Bert Ross from High Meadows Farms in Uxbridge, assisted by Sally McNab, judged the equitation and hunter classes. There was a ride-off for the junior hunter champion of the day. Suzanne Ainley riding Royal Rhythm, Kate Edwards riding My Fair Lady and Kelly Barbour riding Miss Velvet were all tied at the end of the scheduled competition. During the final test, the riders were asked to do flying changes and a fence to break the tie. Kelly Barbour on Miss Velvet won the final test to earn the title, 'Junior Hunter Champion of the Day"'. Kate Edwards and My Fair Lady were reserve champions. There was a tie for '"'Open Hunter of the Day". Alison Salter on Expense Account and Kate Edwards on My Fair Lady rode a shortened higher course to decide the "Open Champion of the Day". Alison Salter and Expense Account took home the plaque and the Championship ribbon while Kate Edwards and My Fair Lady won the Open Reserve Championship ribbon. The tournament was organized by the Midland Volleyball Club and was meant to get local people involved in the sport. Winners of the tournament were the Balmy Beach team from Toronto. Next ac- later. It was a comeback that will go into the books as Midland Therrien's Intermediate Ladies' Softball team fought back from an 8-3 deficit Thursday night to claim the first game in their best of three semi-final series with Christian Island by a 9-8 score. Pitching for Midland were Norma Jean "Beans'"' Lediard and Sharon Borrow, those two walking eight batters. Brenda McCue provided the pitching for Christian Island, walking five batters and striking out six. Midland took an early lead in the first inning with a pair of runs and then had a 3-1 lead at the seven runners, three in the fourth and four in fifth. In the sixth inning, Midland got back on track and brought in six runs while holding Christian Island off the ~ scoreboard to take the lead once again for the win. Top hitters for Christian Island were Mary Lou Monague with a double, hitting three for four, Claudette Copegog hitting two for four with a walk and Brenda McCue hitting three for four with two walks.
