IODE news, views... by M. Gilbert The service given by IODE Kitchewana Chapter members continues to be effective because it always has been aware of the needs of the day and are proud of our ability to help fill those needs. The two principal areas of interest for IODE's support are Services and Education. Participation in both areas are at National, Provincial and local levels. Our contribution to the Labrador Fund aided in supplying a feeding program of milk and nutritious snacks for school children in Labrador. The service was available to 1,000 children at a cost of $10 per child. This makes the year's goal $10,000 at the National level. Kitchewana's Services Secretary, Mrs. Doris Henley, makes two shipments.a year to the Provincial distribution centre of hand knitted garments, layettes, warm winter clothing and toys which- are made or donated by members. The Chapter is also aware of community welfare needs and is always ready to respond to emergency requests. Scholarships awarded by Provincial IODE throughout Ontario are funded largely by Chapter donations. Kitchewana Chapter is pleased to assist Education locally by yearly contributions to M.S.S. Scholarship Fund. Another of our interests is our support to the Midland Music Festival each year. For many years an annual History prize has been given to the graduating class of each of six Midland Elementary Schools. The Prize is now named "The Ethel Wagg Memorial History Prize" and was won in 1981 by the following pupils. Susan Fancy of Regent School, Nathalia Leitch of Park- view School, Malcolm Thornton of Huron Park School, Mike Gadsby of Bayview School, Elizabeth Bourgeois of Monsignor Castex School, Paula Denis of Sacred Heart School. Eight years ago an annual Spelling Contest was set up in Area 3 Simcoe County School District by the joint efforts of the principal's of the schools and Kit- chewana Chapter IODE. In 1981 the contest was held in Regent Park School, Midland. The winners were: Junior Contest- Danielle Dupuis, St. Joseph's School, Penetang. Senior Contest - Caroline Holman, Regent Park School. The winners and each of the 20 con- by Robin Nutbrown arts and crafts, f) nature and much, much some very old songs upon which you can call. testants received a prize from IODE. The winners names we added to the plaques which is held by the school for the year. On May 26 several members of Kit- chewana Chapter were pleased to attend a dinner to celebrate with the Margaret Alexander Chapter of Orillia its 25th Anniversary. In September we will be joining the IODE Chapter of Owen Sound in the celebration of its 75th Anniversary. Miss Grace McMullen who is a most valued member of our Chapter received her 50th year pin in May. The Ontario Provincial IODE Annual Golf Tournament is to be held on Sep- tember 16 at the Golf and Country Club, Barrie. Four Chapters are jointly hosting this event. Duties and arrangements were discussed at our June Chapter meeting held at the home of Mrs. J.D. Walker, ° Midland Point. All plans will be finalized September ist when the Chapter meets at the home of Mrs. Irene Holt, Midland Point. Funding for sur IODE Chapter un- dertakings is done by money raised in our yearly projects and by contributions. We wish to recognize and thank many in the community for their continued support of these events.
