Former bridge +e OF a warship .---.---- Without the benefit of a sign, the thousands of annual visitors to the Penetanguishene town dock have no reason to know that the old dockmaster's office, the white wood building that sits on the main wharf, was once the bridge of a Fairlane warship built in Penetanguishene during the Second World War. OE KK KK KK KK The building was abandoned earlier this sum- mer when the dockmaster moved into a new office on the north side of the town dock. The former bridge could become the first piece in a development of the dock area that would emphasize the town's ship-building and marine history. Town council has instructed the town hall staff to prepare an application for a Board of Industrial Leadership and Development (BILD) grant. BILD grants may be used to improve marinas and boating facilities. A study of the town dock done by Ted Salisbury, a university student who did the study to qualify for a B.A. degree in urban and regional planning, and presented to the town planning board, is being considered as the town forms a plan for im- provement of the dock area. A multi-hundred thousand dollar study of the Huronia area prepared for and delivered to the Ministry of Industry and Tourism last year recommended for Penetanguishene "a year round cultural centre based upon the Francophone heritage and culture. Focus is to be given to a Heritage Harbour of the 'tall ships' in Ontario's history. Heritage harbour shall be a theme marine water park with replicas of vessels of Georgian Bay."' The Marshall Macklin Monaghan Ltd. study is not government policy but a planning guide. No communication had been received by the town as of Monday from the backers of the waterfront hotel and convention centre, Sieur de Champlain Hotel. The backers have until the next council meeting, Aug. 24, to indicate they are going to proceed with the project. If council is not so informed, it will withdraw from its agreement with the group and advertise a second time the opportunity for developers to submit their ideas. BETWEEN THE nOuees SPM. 6AM.
