. a --_ RE OS AGLI FOTO Ss <0 verge It's getting to be ahappy habit for A. E. LePage Novice lacrosse players bring home championship trophy from Barrie tournament by Dave Chalmers The Huronia Lacrosse Championship trophy is in the hands of the Midland A. E. LePage Novice Lacrosse team as a result of three straight wins at the Huronia playdowns held in Barrie on_ the weekend. This is the second time in as many seasons that the A. E. LePage Novices have captured the championship. Midland started the playdowns with a pair of games against Orillia in a two game total goals series which Midland handled 22-5, Midland dropped Orillia 12-2 in the first game as the A. E. LePage team had to contend with the ever present chippy play of Orillia and they played the equivalent of one entire period shor- thanded. This allowed Midland to flex their scoring muscle as Chris Walser and David Chalmers each blasted three goals in the game. Shawn Desjardins and Shane Nichols followed with a pair each while Jesse Perrault notched a single goal and an assist. Mike Walten- bury collected a pair of assists to finish the scoring in game one. Orillia literally showed new life in the second game as the score was deadlocked at 1-1 after the first period. As the first period closed and the second began Orillia returned to their patented style of play in which they collected 10 minor penalties and a major high sticking penalty. This once again permitted Midland to concentrate on the Orillia net and work on the problem of this new goaltender Orillia had for the game. This roadblock was remedied as David Chalmers, Shawn Desjardins and Chris Walser each scored a pair of goals as did Mike Waltenbury. Jason LeClair and John Brophey fired singes to round out the scoring as Shawn Desjardins collected three assists with pairs going to Jesse Perrault, John Brophey and Mike Waltenbury. Chris ;Walser, Shane Nichols, Donald Kruger, David Chalmers and Greg Scott also collected assists. The final score for game two was Midland 10, Orillia 3. After the two preliminary games against Orillia, the A. E. LePage Novices faced Huntsville for the Huronid Championship. The track record of Midland and Huntsville during the seasonal matches indicated that both teams were very evenly matched and that the team to win would have to play a skillful game to have any margin. Midland landed a minor penalty before the opening draw of the game and the ad- vantage was quickly in Huntsville's favour. However, the ball was dropped and _ nine seconds later, Perrault scored to put Midland ahead 1-0. Perrault socred a total of four goals with one assist while David Chalmers scored three goals with one assist and Shawn Desjardins hit for a pair of goals as Chris Walser picked one goal with two assists. The quick start stunned Huntsville to be sure and after two periods Midland was up 8-0. The A. E. LePage team added two more during the third period but during a_ brief snooze during the period Huntsville whipped three goals into the Midland net. Three was the limit for Huntsville as Midland netminder Shawn Price turned back numerous scoring shots in an outstanding game. With the scoring finished, the final outcome was 10-3 in favour of Midland. Each player earned their awards as they put the team play together required to be a con- tender.
