Outdoor volleyball season closes with tourney success The doubles volleyball tournament for men and women, Saturday in Little Lake Park at the outdoor courts, was a huge success with nine teams entered in both the men's and women's divisions. The participants were largely from volleyball clubs and for that reason, competition was limited to the A division. Winners of the men's competition was a local team of Rick Presse and Keith Duval of Midland-Huronia Volleyball Club. They defeated the team of Tony Butler and John Donovan of Oshawa 17-15 and 15-3 in the finals after having been behind 10-2 in the first game. Winning the women's competition was the team of Heather-Sawyer and Kitty Kirpup of the Winvalley volleyball club of Oshawa. Those two won the title in finals action 15-8 and 15-4 over Dianne Wood and Laura Spicer of Scarborough Solars Volleyball Club. The tournament marks the end of the outdoor volleyball season for Little Lake Park and the executive will be meeting this week for a planning meeting for next season. There is even talk of a house league for Midland next year. Tennis championships The preliminary rounds of the men's and women's singles cham- pionships were played at the Elmvale and District Tennis Club last Saturday afternoon. In the men's division, there were five participants: Eric Kay, Rob MacDonald, Tony Farrell, Richard Austin, and Igor Bobrow. The round- robin event had each man playing four eight-game Kramer sets. Igor Bobrow emerged as the overall winner, with four victories while Tony Farrell was the runner-up, losing only once. Those two will play in the cham- pionship match next Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Three ladies took part in the women's division: Katy Austin, Josie Janda and Barb Farrell. They played a round-robin with 10-game Kramer sets. Katy Austin was the winner and Josie Janda the runner-up, and they will play a championship match at the same time as the men. Tonight, the boys' singles preliminary round-robin will start at 6 p.m. Five boys are registered to play. Sunday afternoon the doubles champions for both men and women will be decided. There is still time to register for these events by phoning Katy Austin at 322-2508. Men's basketball tryouts Tryouts for the Basketball League and team if it is formed. Winning pitchers for Therrien's were Ken Davidson and Bob Lapham while Denis Gignac played on the mound for Mr. Submarine. Both teams were scoreless in the first inning but Therrien's exploded in the second inning with 10 runs and followed that up with three more in the third inning. It took Mr. Submarine until the fourth inning to bring their lone runner in. The win leaves Therrien's in second place behind league leaders, Adco Tires. Two days before, Therrien's boasted a similar score as they blanked Castle Village 16-0, Bob Lapham the winning pitcher in that match with a no-hitter. Earl Cousineau was pitching for Castle Village. Therrien's again started the game off scoreless in the opening inning but came on strong in the second inning with seven runs. They quickly followed that up with two runs in the third inning and seven more in the fifth inning. Therrien's played a game last night, those results coming in too late for press time, against Midland Merchants and they will then have one remaining game for the season. That last game will be with Adco Tires, the date to be arranged. Back to school Don't forget school resumes for the fall on Tuesday, Sept. 8 after the long summer holiday period.
