According to Tiny Township's Reeve Morris Darby, the resolution on the controversial three-year term received a great deal of discussion before finally being approved by | delegates at the AMO convention. | Bennett had made it clear in his __| speech that he was prepared to in- | troduce the three-year term with legislation this fall unless there was an objection from the new municipal organization. Reeve Darby observed that the | larger urban municipalities seemed to be urging the longer term because of } the high cost of campaigning in those | areas. The new three-year term would not affect local government in Tiny "too Sees no harm FORK Three-year term to local officials? much", Reeve Darby predicted, since, "'those persons who are sincere about issues and their commitment will not be deterred." The increasing time commitment required for municipal politicians is restricting involvement of some people already, Reeve Darby noted. Penetanguishene's Mayor Ron Bellisle reported that the general consensus at the AMO conference seemed to be in favour of the three- year-term. Bellisle said that the Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs would definately be introducing legislation bringing in the longer municipal term to begin with the next election scheduled fro November, 1982. "T see no harm in it," Bellisle said. "The longer terms may lead to some complacency, but on the other hand it will also give time to get something accomplished."" Mayor Bellisle observed that most municipal politicians serve more than one term anyway, and that very few leave politics after serving only two years.
