Telecare Midland recognized by national body Telecare Midland, one of 22 crisis telephone answering service groups in Canada, received its accreditation Tuesday evening. The 28 volunteer workers in the Midland group are on hand 24 hours a day seven days a week to take calls from people in trouble. Telecare Midland began operation on March 29. A high number of the calls have alcohol in the picture. A group spokesman said he was surprised at the number of callers who were suicidal. The identities of the callers are kept con- fidential. So too are the identities of the Telecare workers who answer the telephones, to ensure their own protection, and to ensure their privacy when they are not on call. Telecare Midland is part of Telecare Teleministries Canada, which in turn is part of Lifeline International. Lifeline International has 200 centres in 11 countries. People seem to have their problems when the formal social welfare offices are closed, the spokesman said. At those times Telecare is a telephone call away.
