Smoke eaters managed to quell the blaze in a back porch before it could get out of hand and sweep through the dwelling. Fire Chief Ted Light said following the blaze that his men were able to confine flames to a back enclosed porch however there was some minor smoke damage It is believed the fire may have started in some refuse stored in the porch. This is the first year the course has been in operation and it was started because minor hockey coaches were commenting the young hockey players didn't know how to skate properly. There will be two test days, tomorrow from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. and the following Saturday during the same hours. Heading the program is Cathy Mandley of Midland and she is assisted by Ruth Robillard of Penetanguishene as second coach. Assistants are Lisa Gignac of Penetanguishene Figure Skating Club, Jeff LeClair and Shawn Marchand of Penetanguishene Minor Hockey. Fine, jail for UIC fraud Gerald Holmes, of 48 Main St. Penetanguishene, pleaded guilty in Midland provincial court on Sept. 21 to six counts of UIC fraud. Holmes, 35, was fined $500 and will serve in addition four days in jail. He will pay to the Unemployment Insurance Commission $549 in benefits he collected while working July through October of last year. During the time he was working for one of two companies and earning $1,800, he drew $549 in UIC benefits, a UIC official said Tuesday. Orser off to England teday Brian Orser, of Penetanguishene, Canadian Senior Men's Figure Skating Champion, is leaving this morning for England where he will be competing. Orser will be returning early next week. French Centre fund raising off to good start Although no official counts are available on the Centre d'activites Francaises' fund raising campaign, things are said to be going well with some very major pledges already having been recorded. There is, according to Basil Dorion, general manager for the French Activity Centre, one pledge for $2,000 and at least six or seven for $1,000 each. JA about to start Junior Achiement (JA) is about to start another season in Midland - Penetanguishene. Last Friday directors began a recruiting program at St. Theresa's, ESPSS and MSS. A general meeting has been slated for RCA on Sept. 30 starting at 7 p.m. As in the past JA will operate every Wed- nesday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at local in- dustries to be announced later.
