ee Amaia enamel (guaran 5 Phim tae MSS Marauders hold on for major 4-22 opening day triumph here _, Garry Forbes Midland Secondary School Marauders varsity .football team may. have been saved by the bell in their season opener against Orillia's 'Twin Lakes Secondary School, Thursday at MSS. ~< Visitors managed to close-a 10 point halftime gap to just two points and were looming large on Midland's one-yard line when the final gun sounded to give the Marauders a 24-22 victory. But despite the close call -- which capped off a scoreless last half for Midland -- Marauders coach Randy Ritchie was happy with his team's debut. "J was really pleased with our offense," Ritchie said, ""We've had problems getting everyone fitted with helmets, and because of that, had very little time for full- equipment scrimmages and a chance to get our timing down. 'But we tried out a few things, made a few mistakes, and saw what could happen if we let down in any area." Ritchie expressed disappointment in his club's defense, but pointed out they did come up with the goods in the second half. And without their holding power on some key plays in the final quarter, Twin Lakes might have been able to steal the game. Midland racked up 332 total yards on offense, and Twin Lakes was limited to 929. Fullback Gary Beausoleil - a defensive cornerback last season - counted for 160 of the Marauders' 202 hit on 10 of 15 passing attempts for 130 yards. Things didn't look good for Midland right off the bat. Twin Lakes jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead when they ran back the opening kickoff and added a two-point convert. Six points Midland bounced back later in the first quarter when Beausoleil moved in for six points., but Twin Lakes answered with six more of their own before time ran out in the opening frame. Marauders flexed their muscles in the second quarter and took to the air, grabbing the lead when quarterback Friesen connected on passes to flankers Ernie Desroches and brother John Friesen. Beausoleil added his second touchdown of the day on a play-action sequence from 25 yards out, falling over the goal line in what turned out to be the final play of the half. None of Midland's four first-half touch- downs were converted, and they went to the break with a 24-14 lead. Twin Lakes' offense slipped into gear in the final two quarters, but Midland's defenders managed to hold them to eight points - a touchdown and two-point convert - and withstand their assault in the closing minutes. Midland fumbled once in the contest, but evened out that stat when defensive back Mike Leo picked off a Twin Lakes pass and ran it back 13 yards. NOTES: Some confusion in Midland's defensive ranks resulted in only 11 men on the field during one Twin Lakes touchdown Marauders attempted one field goal, that in the fourth quarter .. more than 14 brand new Midland helmets were found to be too small, and the club is awaiting replacement from Riddell. Due to the shortage, Midland managed only three dress practices - using some borrowed helmets in those - and borrowed eight i ae Grid-iron action at MSS helmets from Ecole Secondaire Penetanguishene Secondary School for Thursday's game ..
