Administrator': Ss -* s report tabled at HDH's annual meeting, Mon. It takes money, lots of it to operate a hospital, including MHuronia District Hospital. That's what 100 people who attended Monday night's fifth annual meeting of the hospital discovered for them- selves during a series of reports. One such report was prepared by the hospital's administr- ator. Because of the importance of E.T. Pritchard's comments they are being republished here at this time: "Fiscal year 1980-81 began with our budget submission to the Ministry of Health in- dicating a deficit of $83,000. "Tt should be noted that an appeal for ad- ditional funds was made to the Ministry at the time of our Budget submission and we subsequently received an additional amount of $70,000. "All staff and department heads are to be congratulated for working within our Budget while ensuring quality of patient care was not affected or quantity of care reduced. "To simplify the figures for you, the Ministry of Health allowed us a 10.7 per cent increase on our Budget over our fiscal year 79-80. This includes the additional $70,000. received on our appeal. Some of the major cost increases were in the area of medical and surgical supplies up 19.6 per cent and drugs 11.1 per cent. "The hospital's cost for utilities, i.e. gas and hydro, increased by almost 13 per cent. We have little or no control over these costs and since these items are considered essential to the running of the hospital, the only way we can achieve our Budget is to ensure that staff are managed and utilized wisely. "The fact that we did end up with a surplus as indicated on our Financial Statement is a credit to our depart- ment heads for the expert utilization of all personnel. 'As mentioned by the Chairman of the Board, we were allowed to open the additional 18 Long Term Care beds at the end of February and this has alleviated most of the pressure on our active treatment beds as well as _ excessive pressures being placed on our staff. "In spite of con- straints, we continued to provide cardiac care teaching to patients in the Intensive Care Unit, and the meals for the Meals-on-Wheels _ pr- ogramme in our Community. "Statistically we treated approximately two hundred more in- patients and ap- proximately one thousand more out- patients over our last fiscal year. 'Many of our hospital staff attended con- tinuing education programmes, seminars and work shops to keep abreast of the latest happenings in their fields. This of course is not only a benefit to the staff but to the patients we serve. "'We are continuing to review the Energy Study which was per- formed and paid for by the Ministry of Health in 1979. We are attempting to make changes where capital costs are minimal and where energy savings would be largest. "The Hospital Board has been very busy during the past year and a few items reviewed by the Board were the Hospital By-Laws, our existing Auditing Firm and Legal Firm, and the Pharmacy Consultants. "T would like to record the gratitude of the Administration to the members of the Board of Trustees for their advice, support and direction during the past year. "To the Auxiliary members and volutn-, teers who contributed so enthusiastically and to the medical and non- medical staff who continue to provide the highest quality of palient care - my Sin- cere appreciation."
