One that got away A member of Midnite Express looks skyward in disbelief after missing a pass in recent Midland- Penetanguishene Recreational Football League action at Midland Secondary School. Midnite Express were knocked out of contention by the Unknowns last week. Three divisional championships games will be played this Sunday at Ecole Secondaire Penetanguishene Secondary School, with the 'A' Division final between the Redskins and the Oilers set for 3 p.m. Ontario's public-a- ccess snowmobile trails should /be safe for at least another season, according to Eddie Fulawka, president of Lafontaine's Maple Valley Club. Fulawka said Ministry of Natural Resources spokesman John Winters told about 72 club members at a meeting last Sunday that trails which offer public snowmobiling would be allowed at least the same amount in grants as last year. To the Maple Valley Club, that means more than $70 a mile -- or approximately $7,000. Last year, Fulawka says, the club didn't receive its full grant and the club had to make up the difference -- about - $2,000 -- from mem- bership fees. Earlier this year, the MNR_ had _ indicated possible cutbacks in the Extra Points IGA Bonspiel has 16 rink competing The IGA Mens' Open Bonspiel is slated to get underway tonight, beginning at 7 p.m. al the Penetanguishene Curling Club. Sixteen rinks are entered in the bonspiel, about half from Penetanguishene. More than $800 in cash prizes will be awarded, with $250 going to the top rink. Finals are set for Sunday at 1 p.m. Lacrosse meeting The Midland Minor Lacrosse Association will be holding an executive meeting Monday night at the Midland Arena Board Room. The Association welcomes any interested members of the public to attend and par- ticipate in the meeting, set to begin at 7 p.m. YMCA contest winner Hight-year-old Lynda Hawke _ of Waubaushene-Fesserton Public School won top prize of a family day pass in the Midland YM-YWCA's recent water safety coloring contest. Entries came from schools which are in- volved in the Y's fall swimming lessons program, including Huron Park, Corpus Christi, Bayview, Huronia Centennial and Waubaushene-Fesserton (Waubaushene Annex). Each child was given a water safety picture to color and each school judged the best of their lot. The winning entries will be posted in the Y hallway next week. Second prize of a YMCA water safety coloring book went to Shadie Lynn Walsh of Huron Park. Bulls tie Lions 6-6 The Midland Bulls Rugby Club ended their 1981 season On a high note, scoring a 6-6 exhibition tie against Toronto Lions last Saturday at Fletcher's Fields in Toronto. Midland's only try was scored by John Nix on the last play of the game. Lorne Fisher kicked the conversion. Sixth and $250 The Bob Ruston rink, curling out of the Penetanguishene Curling Club, won sixth place and a $250 prize at last weekend's Walkerton Bonspiel. The Ruston rink won five of their six games, losing to the Ken Buckham rink of London in their final matchup. Anyone wishing to sell used hockey equipment is asked to drop it off at the arena between 8 and 10 a.m., Sat. Dec. 5. At this time the equipment will be tagged and the owners' asking price will be marked on the article. It will then be displayed on Saturday from 10a.m. to 1 p.m. and Sunday from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. If the article is sold, the PMHA will in turn receive 15 per cent of the asking price as commission. At the same time we will have some older equipment for sale at reasonable prices. This equipment includes hockey sweaters and socks, new interior mouth guards, and goalie pads which are ideal for road hockey. So start gathering up your old equipment and bring it in Dec. 5 - we may just find a buyer for you. Reaction from the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs was strong -- to the point of asking members to withold license fees until the government reached a final decision. Grant cutbacks, the Federation said, would have meant the end for some trails, and the necessity of going private for most others. The Maple Valley Club has more than 100 members, each of whom pay a $25 family membership or $20 single annual fee. The government grants are combined with the membership fees to Operate grooming equipment and purchase necessary trail markings, fences, and other items. Snowmobiletrails will get grants, IVINR rep says The Maple Valley trails are open to the public and, this year, are part of the cross- province Snow 1 '"'sled highway"' which -con- nects clubs from _ the Ontario-Quebec border through to Wingham into a single, unimpeded route. Oldtimers defeated The Midland Oldtimers were dumped 9-6 by Collingwood in exhibition hockey action last Sunday at Midland Arena. Warren Duckworth seored three times for the hosts with others coming from Ross Heacock, with two, and Wayne Marchand. Assists were provided by Murray Yorke and Marchand, with*two each, and Bill Gray with one. The Midland club is also hosting a dance next Friday at the Rooster Tail Inn on Hwy. 27. Admission is $15 a couple, which includes a lunch. Entertainment will be provided by the Fig Leaf Jazz Band.
