New elbow Midland Athletics' neweomer Joe Butson gets into the spirit of things by applying a high-flying elbow to the helmet of Barrie Flyers defenceman Kevin Guest during their OHA Major Intermediate A hockey league mat- chup Sunday at Midland Arena. The A's won the game 7-5 to keep pace with the Flyers in the league's basement. Up two points, down five players The Midland Athletics picked up a couple of valuable points with their 7-5 home-ice decision over the Barrie Flyers Sunday, but, in the process, lost five valuable players. The incident which resulted in the suspension of nine players -- four from Barrie -- came just past the midway mark of the third period. Midland was sporting a narrow 5- 4 lead and Barrie was pressuring for the tie. The A's Larry Cowan decided about then that he would release some of that pressure, specifically that applied by the Flyers' Dave Boyce, and proceeded to brawl. Four other Midland players -- Terry Spiker, Tony Stone, Doug McMannn and Hugh Robertson -- were, in the. eyes of referee Rick Ramsay, not doing their utmost to stay away from the action. He handed game misconducts to all five, as well as to John Install now and get up to Surgenor, Jack Smith, Phil Favero and Derrick Boyce of the Flyers. Game _ misconducts assessed during the final 10 minutes of play carry an automatic one- game suspension. The A's were looking forward to that next game -- a home-ice matchup Friday against the Orillia Terriers, whom the A's beat in Orillia last meeting for their first-ever road victory. Now, things are looking dark again just as the Midlanders were catching a glimpse of light. Before the late-game outbreak, the game was relatively calm. Midland had taken only four minors up to that point and Barrie only two. Midland goal-getters were Spiker, with two, Paul Robillard, Larry Cowan, Doug McMann, Andy Zurawski and Gary Hansford. Team captain Ken Knapton watched three assists.
