Gymnastics Corner by Ken St. Amant Last week we talked about the Junior team that will be representing the Hurons at the first qualifying meet in Toronto in the near future. This week I would like to focus on the Tyro girls and the boys' teams that will be travelling to Toronto on Dec. 5-6. : Girls The Tyro category is for girls who are under the age of 14 as of Jan. 1, of the com- petitive season. This year we have two girls representing the Hurons in this division: Lorraine Lacroix and Karen Green. Presently, Lorraine is a Grade 8 student at Monseignor Castex Separate School. This is her second year of competition in this division and her third year with the Hurons. She is actively involved in many other sports as well. She is a member of her school's cross country and volleyball teams. She also participates in swimming and bowling. Her goal in life is to become an architect. Karen Green -is a Grade 5 student at Bayview Public School. At 12 years of age, this is her first taste of Ontario Gymnastics Federation competition. She has been in the gym club for three years and has participated in many pre-competition gym meets as well as many school meets. Like most other members of the Hurons she is also involved in many other activities. She especially enjoys swimming and skating. We are anticipating Karen will have a very successful year. Boys The Hurons will be sending two boys into competition in Toronto on Dec. 6. We will be represented by Loris Ferraro and Jason Held. Loris is in the Argo 'A' category. This is for & boys under 12 years of age as of Jan. 1 of the competitive season. Loris placed second in his division last year in the Metro-West regionals and represented the Hurons at the Provincials in Thunder Bay. He ended up placing seventh overall. This 10-year-old Regent Public School student hopes to be an eventual competitor at the Olympics. Even at this young age, he has already collected plenty of hardware. To date, he has won three gold medals, four silver and one bronze. Another successful representative for the Hurons is Jason Held. Although he has far less experience in gymnastics he has wasted little time in making his presence felt. Last year he placed first in his division in the regionals. This year he is moving up a category to compete at the Tyro 'A' level. This is for boys under the age of 14 as of Jan. 1 of the competitive Season. Jason is presently 12 years old attending Grade 8 at Victoria Harbour Public School. He has also started a collection of medals of his own. Last year he managed to win both a gold and a silver medal at his various competitions. GYMNASTICS CORNER Nov. 30 (Mon.) -- Gymnathon, Primary, syatcg oe P.S., Competitive, Corpus Christi S. The team rolled 6,865 for five games, finishing only 22 pins behind the first-place Orillia team. The members of the team rolled five-game scores as follows: Jules Marion (1,243), Bill Pud- dicombe (1,228), J.P. Desroches (1,205), Ron Desroches (1,173), Peter Lacroix (1,072) and Moe Lacroix (944). Teams from Collingwood (6,728) and Camp Borden (6,696) took the third and fourth money positions respec- lively. After the fourth week of Hi-Low Doubles Tournament action, two more leagues have announced their winners that will advance to the zone finals. Bob Therrien and Rick Moreau finished first in the Knight Haven mens league while Doug Martin and Diane Duval took first place in the Tuesday 7-ups league. Due to the large number of entries in the 7-ups league, the second-place team of Joe Stewart and Janet Duquette will also advance to the zone final. As leagues finish up this tournament, all score boards should be turned in to tournament director Dennis Brabant. Approximately a dozen Midland bowlers will travel to Orillia this Sunday to participate in the first round of the Carling O'Keefe Open Ke tournament. The bowlers will roll 10 games this weekend in Orillia and 10 games next weekend in Barrie to determine the top 10 men and nine ladies who will represent the Huronia zone in the Ontario finals this year. Good luck to all involved. Around the Leagues: Louis Maurice rolled the high single in the Midland Industrial League for the second week in a row with a 349 score to round out an 812 triple, while Dennis Dusome of the Sunday Mixed league rolled a 337 single. Fifty-five bowlers have already sugned up for the 210 and under tournament in Midland up to Wednesday night.
