eS ee eae OO ae Stewart fails bid Cooper picked as county's warden by Adrienne Graham Gardner Reeve "'Russ" Cooper of Rama Township has been elected Warden of Simcoe County for the coming year. Warden Cooper was elected by a majority of County council Tuesday in Midhurst, defeating his rival candidate, Reeve Art Stewart of Penetanguishene. Cooper had run un- successfully for Warden in 1980, but was elected Tuesday on what has become a traditional second at- tempt. A - procession of councillors was piped into the chambers at Midhurst for the annual roll-call vote at the 140th inaugural meeting of County council. Warden Cooper was nominated by County councillors Gary and Pridham. He had served as chairman of the General Govern- ment committee last year, and has been involved in politics for twenty-two years. In his supporting address, nominator Gary described Cooper as a man of integrity, "worthy of joining the ranks of past Wardens of Simcoe County." Penetanguishene Reeve Art Stewart's name was proposed by Councillors Andrade and MacDonald. Andrade characterized Stewart as a "fair and forthright man" who as Warden would be "a leader of conscience and flexibility"'. In the voting which ensued, a majority of the 40 County coun- cillors including Midland __representat- ives supported Rama Reeve Russ Cooper. Art Stewart of Penetanguishene re- ceived the votes of Tiny and Tay delegates. Some of the 40 County councillors cast more than one vote, according to the assessment of their municipality, bringing the total number of votes to 62. Scrutineers deter- mined that Russ Cooper had obtained' the necessary majority and he was "duly sworn' under oaths of office and allegiance administered by Judge A.M. Carter. Judge Carter wished the newly-inaugurated Warden a '"'successful and significant year of achievement"' in spite of what he termed "the coming year of social and economic unrest." Warden Cooper pledged to support greater social, health and childrens' services, and expansion of the County Museum and archives in the coming year. Agriculture, tourism and industry will receive encouragement as well, said Cooper. He also proposed to call on government ministries' expertise in the development of County landfill sites, saying "Health and the en- vironment are priorities if we are to survive into the 2ist century.' Following the War- den's inaugural speech, past Wardens, Rama Council, M.P. Ron Stewart and M.P.P. Al McLean were recognized. M.P.P. Al McLean congratulated Warden Cooper on his election, and predicted that "we'll be seeing a Warden from Penetanguishene in the near future."
