Dispenser approved Town won t serve as ratepayers' friendly banker by Adrienne Graham Gardner i Town of Penetanguishene is no longer going to serve as the "friendly banker" for those ratepayers who are behind in their taxes. At the Monday night meeting of council the new rate to be charged on tax arrears was set at 1834 per cent, or 12 per cent above the average bank te. The proportion of tax arrears to the total assessment has been on the increase in the last two years, clerk Yvon Gagne reported to council. This trend is particularly obvious in the com- mercial sector, where business owners have found it cheaper to "borrow" from the town rather than obtain loans to cover taxes under bank rates of up to 21 per cent. Council okays propane set-up by Adrienne Graham Gardner Penetanguishene council has granted approval of rezoning to allow the installation of a 2,000 gallon propane dispenser by Penetang Motor Sales. The propane outlet will service fleet trucks initially, but will "eventually serve the family car" predicted public works chairman Ray Baker at Monday night's council meeting. Councillor Ken Tannahillconfirmed the strength of the trend towards propane powered vehicles, saying "the demand will quadruple Ministry expectations, and an outlet for the area will bea necessity." There was considerable discussion by council on safety and. en- vironmental problems posed by the propane tank. The dispensing facility will be surrrounded by concrete pillars, and the control panel will be locked, ac- cording the regulations set out by the Ministry of Consumer and Com- mercial Relations. The construction of a sewage collection and treatment system for the north end of. Penetanguishene has been postponed one year. The project, which is estimated at $2,753,000, is being held back until the 1983 construction year because of the costs and "additional homework necessary" according to town clerk, Yvon Gagne. The cost of the system will be subsidized by grants from both the Ministry of the Environment and the Ontario Neighbourhood Improvement Program of the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing.
