NE Port McNicoll by Eileen Hocken On Jan. 6, there was a social evening for {the parents and girls in Port MecNicoll Brownies, Guides and Pathfinders at the Community Centre. About 85 were in attendance for this social get-together. Mrs. Thompson, the ichairman of the Parent's Group Com- mittee, introduced Commissioner Shirley 'Rooney and the Division Commissioner, |Mrs. Lynn Cussins along with the other |members of the Parents' Group. Commissioner Rooney addressed the parents about a problem that seems to have cropped up time and time again since September. Many parents have complained about the fund raising that has been going on and some are refusing to allow their daughters to participate. Commissioner Rooney explained why there is a need to fund raise and what the proceeds are used for, pointing out that the funds raised are exclusively for the use of the girls in our village. The decision to continue or discontinue fund raising was left up to the parents present. While ballots were passed around, Commissioner Rooney pointed out that if the vote to discontinue the fund raising, the parents would have to put out a lot of money for their girl's activities, outings, craft materials, badges, etc. If the parents were not able to afford the money for all these things, the girls would be the ones to suffer. Mrs. Thompson also asked, if the vote turned out favourably to continue fund raising, that the parents please be aware that more participation from them would be required. "Tt's the same handful who attend the -Parents' Group meetings,"' Mrs. Thomp- son said, "and the same few who help out. More participation is needed."' When the ballots were handed in and counted, the vote turned out unanimous - in favour of letting fund raising continue as it has in the past. The next Parents' Group Committee meeting will take place at the Community Centre on Wednesday, Jan. 13th, at 8:30 p.m. Your attendance would be ap- preciated. There is to be a toboggan party for the Port MeNicoll and Victoria Harbour Brownies, Guides and Pathfinders on Saturday, Jan. 16th, at St. John's United Church in Victoria Harbour. The girls' lunch will be supplied - hot dogs, hot chocolate and do-nuts. The toboggan party will be from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Port MecNicoll Public Library will be closed Friday, Jan. 15, and Monday, Jan. 18, for book exchange. A little information came my way and for anyone who has wondered where the excellent cartoons came from that the Port MeNicoll Lions Club had for their children's Christmas party, it was through the Port MeNicoll Public Library. -- Despite the awful snow storm last Friday, 80 youths still managed to attend the teen dance put on by the Recreation Board. The chaperones found the teens very well behaved. Thanks are extended to the chaperones who volunteered their time to make the teen dance possible - Jean Murray, Marge Fournier, Judy Dubbin, Pat and Jane Armstrong and Len Hocken. Thanks are also extended to the disc- jockeys, Jim Donaldson, Phil Paget and Kim Westerlaken. A $2 gift certificate was won by Sandra Dorion and Mike Quesnelle won an album. The first spot dance was won by Ted Black and Cindy Archer; the second won by Ted Black and Yvonne Mayo; the third spot dance was won by Stacy Smith and Lucy Smith. Port MecNicoll Recreation Board are holding their family skating party from 7 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16th. There will be music to skate to and a snack bar will be open for the sale of hot chocolate, etc. The skating party will take place at Port Enjoys social evening MecNicoll Park (up on the hill). The Recreation Board have emphasized that this event is a family affair but anyone is welcomed to attend. There will be no admission fee. A large bonfire will help to warm those cold skaters who take a short break. The Youth Group seems to be coming along even more strongly this year. There are 44 card holding members at this time. The Youth Group held their election of officers. Syd Gendron is the new president; Billy Scott is vice-president; Diana Armstrong, Secretary; Belinda Cleland, Treasurer. Starting Thursday, an instructor in judo has agreed to come to the meetings to give the kids judo lessons a couple of times a month. The Youth Group is in need of female adults to help supervise the group meetings on Thursday nights. These take place at Port McNicoll Public School from 7 to 9 p.m. The sub-zero temperatures and snow storms which hit our area on the weekend made many of the Port McNicoll youngsters happy on Monday. To their delight, Port McNicoll Public School was closed for the day. It was even more fun than playing hooky, especially when there was no chance of getting into trouble for missing classes. 120 minutes... that's all One of the more faster Midland council meetings in recent months was staged at town hall Monday night.
