Mercury dips and so does windchill factor by Doug Reed For the second weekend in a row, a new wave of snowsqualls and blizzards swept through a goodly portion of North America including here in North Simcoe. The brutal inclement weather arrived right on cue late Friday as this newspaper reported it would. Friday, residents here in the heart of Huronia got a good taste of what they might expect over the weekend as snowflurries turned to snowsqualls and by Saturday those snowsqualls turned into a full-blown mid-January blizzard. By late Sunday conditions improved but they still weren't anything you could write home about. And although this past weekend wasn't quite as frigid as the previous one, which smashed all-time low temperature readings this century for many parts of Canada and the U:S., it still was very, very c-c-c-cold! The mercury dipped both Saturday and Sunday to -20C. However brisk winds, gusting at times to 50km/h sent the windchill factor reeling to -48. That was warm compared to the previous weekend's -65 windchill factor reading here at the Gateway to the 30,000 Islands. Again OPP were forced to close area highways because of drifting snow which caused numerous whiteouts on both major and secondary traffic routes. Police also probed a number of weather- related motor-vehicle accidents during the weekend. So far January 1982 will go into the record books as a tragic month. To date a total of 250 people have lost their lives because of weather-related incidents such as fires, car crashes, being stranded in homes and autos, etc. Last week's toll from an airliner crash in Washington isn't included in the long list of weather-related deaths although there's suspicion the crash might have been caused by ice forming on the air craft. In Florida 24F temperatures took a big bite out of the Sunshine State's citrus in- dustry. Fruit growers have already estimated that at least $1 billion worth of oranges and grapefruit have bit the dust as a result of record-setting low temperatures and frost. In any event by Monday, although it was still bitterly cold (-20) in this neck of the woods, the sun made its first appearance in the past couple of days which was reason enough to lift the spirits of those who had been locked in Old Man Winter's iee box for the past 48-60 hours in the southern Georgian Bay region. As for next weekend? Let's not even think about it until it arrives! Brrr!!! There you go Joshua Big Brother Bruce Dey hands a bowling ball to his Little Brother, Joshua Beauvais. Costly collision A Maria Street, Penetanguishene, man was charged early Friday evening by town police, after the car he was driving and one driven by Nancy Paus of Scarborough came _ into collision on Simcoe Street near Main Street. Gordon Moreau faces a charge of starting from a stopped position not in safety. Police set total damage at $800. Medical help would have been close by Had two Midland practitioners been injured after their vehicles collided just before noon in Penetanguishene, they wouldn't have had far to go to be treated. Town police say vehicles driven by Doctors James Martin and Joe Dolezel collided near the entrance to Penetanguishene General Hospital causing a total of $2,000 damage. There were no injuries or charges. The mishap is said to have occurred during a weather-related whiteout. Stolen snowmobile hasn't turned up Police here have been searching for a stolen snowmobile belonging to Ronald Dalton, Fox Street, reported missing Friday evening from the rear of 70 Main St. Licence number of the missing 1973 Ski-doo is 447964.
