by Eileen Hocken Another Get-Acquainted night in Port MeNicoll - another success! Reeve John Moreau organized his second get- acquainted night which was held at the Community Centre last Wednesday. It received T.V. coverage with parts of it being aired Jan. 28 on CKCO-TV and the whole of it broadcast at 8:30 p.m. Sunday and Monday on Cable 12. és Reeve Moreau held this event to make the people realize all the volunteer assistance we get from so many people, all the work that is needed to run a village even the small size of Port McNicoll. It also made it possible for the different groups and committees to outline or briefly discuss their projects and plans for the coming year. According to Reeve Moreau, 'Our Community is terrific! One we can all be proud of.' He feels it's about time other municipalities become aware of this and it's equally important that the residents of Port McNicoll appreciate that the Council members are doing their best to see that the village is run as smoothly and ef- ficiently as possible. Port McNicoll has seen. many new changes in the last year and the one we are most proud of is our new Community Hall on Seventh Avenue. Special guests that evening were the Warden of Simcoe County, Russel Cooper, and his lovely wife. Apparently it's one of the first times a Warden has attended any function in Port so we were doubly honoured to have Warden Cooper present. One thing Warden Cooper will never forget is the small blunder he made when he thanked Reeve Moreau for inviting him and his wife to the get-acquainted do and then praised the Council of Victoria Harbour for the good job they were doing in and around Port. Reeve Moreau's laughing rejoinder that all his trouble in trying to get Port MeNicoll on the map didn't seem to be paying off too well when even the Warden of Simcoe County referred to Port MeNicoll as Victoria Harbour. Ted Walker, our deputy-reeve, in- troduced the different members who work in the Municipal office and also spoke of the plans Port has for building a new Library in the village. : To date, approximately $3,700 has been raised for this project and an attempt is being made to form a fund-raising com- mittee - the funds to go towards the con- struction of this new Library. Leo Copeland, roads commissioner and president of the Lions Club had several introductions to make. He complimented the Road Superintendant, Vic Kelly, for the good job he and the men working with him were doint. Leo also spoke briefly of the Lions Club and the progress this fairly new group has made in the village. With the help of government grants, they were able to fix the skating rink at Port McNicoll Park and build heated washroom facilities to ac- comodate the skaters. This is just one of the projects the Lions Club have accomplished in the past year. As Leo said, "We're new, but trying to do our best." The pricipal of Port McNicoll Public School, Lloyd Farquar, had some sad-:news to impart that night, and though this is unofficial as yet, Port school might lose its well-liked principal to Midland's Parkview School. In turn, the principal of that school, Jack Bell, is to take over for Mr. Farquar. We will hate to see Mr. Farquar go in Sep- tember, but wish him the best of luck in his new school. Mr. Farquar, who has been in Port for the past 10 years, complimented the village in their use of adult crossing guards. Marg Lemieux, the president of the Senior Citizens Club, spoke of their in- volvement with "Silver Thread"' which is formulating in Midland. If you are, or know of any senior citizen living alone, please give the name and address to Mrs. Lemieux or Mrs. May Moriarty who is helping to organize the Midland group. Mr. Art Bell, another well-known per- sonage in our community, is General Manager and Treasurer of the Port MeNicoll Credit Union. Art was instrumental a few months ago in releasing a sizeable amount of money which a very active group of people began to raise back in 1964 for the construction of an arena in Port. The arena wasn't built but the funds which were deposited in an account at the Credit Union accumulated interest and dividends over the years until there was almost $5,000 in this account. The money was turned over to the Recreation Board for the purchase of tables and chairs for the new Community Centre. Mrs. Golda Beech and her brother, (dubbed the Golden Pair of Port MeNicoll) were introduced by Reeve Moreau and Mrs. Beech presented with a plaque which is to hand underneath a lovely wall hanging she made and donated to the Community Hall. ; This hanging is a work of art, lovingly made by an expert and Port is proud to show it off. It represents the Port MecNicoll Community Centre with its opening date displayed in the centre. There were about 55 people present at the get-acquainted party, too many for me Warden comes to Port to be able to name in this column. There were also many who were unable to be there. For those who might be new to the village, I would like to mention some of the groups who help in the running of the community. _ The Council members not previously noted here: Ross Cameron and Chris Merritt; Clerk Treasurer, Alex Hancox; Librarian, Cherry Hancox; Assistant Librarian, Lanna Garrett; Members of the Recreation Committee, Library Board, Planing Board, Committee of Adjust- ments, Property Standards Committee and Fire Department. There. are also Monsignor Belanger, Father Egan, Rev. Al Farthing; Doctors, Talbot and Besley; also Bill Nickolson and Rosemary Thompson, Chairmen of the Group Committees for the Guiding and Scouting organizations. Larry Perrault, president of the Port Legion; and Doug Haig, the village's solicitor. A dance topped off the evening's festivities with the popular Gil Robillard and his band playing. A lovely lunch followed. Thanks extended to Connie Kelly and Joyce Burns who worked hard in the kitchen while the rest of us had fun. Badminton for adults will be starting today at 8:30 p.m. at the Community Centre. There is a $5 registration fee for the season. The Parents' Group Committee will be holding a Euchre Party to raise funds for the Guiding Organization in Port. This will take place at the Port McNicoll Legion on Monday, Feb. 8, at 7:30 p.m. Admission price is $1.50 per person. Everyone is welcome - the support will be appreciated. There will be a 50-50 draw and many prizes. Refreshments will be served after the card playing.
