In good humor Skip Scotty Wallace didn't have any time to be gazing at the humorous posters on the Midland Curling Club walls during the Legion Branch 80 Bonspiel Saturday. Wallace led his rink -- composed of Jim Malcolm, Paul Smith and Paul Gapp -- to vic- tory in the event. piped in by the Legion Pipes and Drums, led by Cheryl Hobson. Runnerup was the Murray York rink. Bill Johnson's foursome nabbed third place. Ten rinks were Alumni torn apart by student cagers MSS Grade 13 basketball player Todd Clarke snarls' at the ball during Saturday's Alumni Basketball Night at Midland Secondary School. There really wasn't much to growl about, though. The students beat the teachers and alumni in all three games. Lynn Morton's rink arrived home on Friday Jan. 22 after curling nine ten-end games in four days at the Southern Ontario Ladies Curling Association Championships in St. Catharines. They were tied for first place in round-robin play until the third day when they lost to Guelph 5-3. The following morning they were defeated by St. Catharines. The af- ternoon match gave them a win against Oshawa but forced another game with St. Catharines producing another loss which left them in fourth spot. The St. Catharines rink placed third with London first and Toronto Royals second. These three rinks go on to St. Thomas to curl against the three winners from the Northern Ontario Championships -- Thurnder Bay, North Bay and Kingston, beginning Jan. 31. One winner will go to Regina for the canadian Championships Feb. 27 - Mar. 6. Congratulations to Lynn, Vivian Shaw, Marg Bourgeois and Diane Vollick for a valiant try. Just the thought of curling that many games in so few days makes me tired! Lynn said last Friday that she was just get- ting over it all. She has been rehashing each game in her sleep ever since! The Men's 'First Ever' Cash Bonspiel in Midland went very well. I'm afraid to say that all the money went out of town but I'm sure the winners will be back. The big prize of $800 went to the Sharples rink from the Leaside Curling Club. Second spot went to Bob Ruston's rink from Penetanguishene. The third event was captured by Brad Mitchell's rink from the Humber Curling Club and winner of the fourth event was Larry Merkley's rink, also from Penetanguishene. The third event was captured by Brad Mit- chell's rink from the Humber Curling Club and winner of the fourth event was Larry Merkley's rink, also from Penetanguishene. There was some terrific curling to watch -- I should know, I spent the whole weekend peering through the glass! @ Four rinks from our Ladies section slipped over to Penetanguishene last Wednesday to curl in the P.M.C.L. Bonspiel. Only eight teams were entered in the spiel but the curling was highly competitive. Meaford went home with first prize. Diane Ruston's 'e rink from the host club took second place. High one game went to Lorraine Moreau's rink, also from the host club and Shirley Stoke's last minute pick up rink from Midland took home P.M.C.L. tote bags for being low no-game winner! By the time this article goes to press, Gwenn Milley, Doreen McCurry, myself and Marylynne Beauvais will have joined Lynn Morton's rink at the Barrie Curling Club to curl as a double entry in the single knockout District Playdowns for the Ladies Tankard. Winners of these playdowns will go to Parry Sound March 2-4 for the Division Playdowns. Finals will be held in London, Ont. on March 24. There will be a Ladies in-club Valentine Bonspiel on Tuesday, Feb. 9, beginning at 9 a.m. Any ladies who haven't put their names on the entry card which is up on the bulletin baord, please do so soon. Bring your own lunch and curl two eight end games. You just might win a prizecand have some fun! The Open Jitney, held on the evening of Saturday Jan. 30, went over very well. Forty- four (mainly new faces) showed up to try their hand at the game. Teams were made up as people arrived and there was lots of ac- tivity on the ice. Winners received bottles of wine or free drinks at the bar. A dance followed the curling. @ The Ladies playoffs for the Captain MacLennan Trophy took place on Thursday, Jan. 28. June Walton's rink with Joan Bar- nett, Kay Lapere and Wendy Larmand were the winners. Runners up were Dorothy Spicer, Fran Mdgaw, Gwen Milley and Marylynne Beauvais.
