Let'sgo! Two-year-old Janis Murton, daughter of Lafontaine's Maple Valley Club treasurer Ron Murton of Perkinsfield, hops aboard a snowmobile during Saturday's local edition of the 1982 Whipper Watson Snowarama for Timmy. The event attracted 38 riders from across North Huronia, and total pledges amounted to more than $7,300 -- with even more tocome. The Easter Seal Society, beneficiary of the event, had a projection of $5,000 for this, the first Snowarama in the area. The trek in '83. Kiwanis Club of Midland sponsored the Snowarama, the Maple Valley Club provided the facilities, Dock Lunch provided the food, machines were provided by David's Sales and Service of Wasaga Beach, the Yamaha Corp. Penetanguishene's Chalet Sports and Midland's Performance Motor Sports. Most of all, the riders gave their time and made it all happen, and plans are already underway for another 100 km. and of Canada, \ eCont'd from pg. 16 Orser has no secrets. He's not mysterious, he's not mystical, 'he's|_not mythical. And that may just be his whole trouble: he's just too real. He wins a title and behaves like anybody on the street might. He chats like an or- dinary person. He holds his head at the same angle as regular folk. That, of course, is just not playing the game. The media want something they can get their fangs into. They want drama, pathos, neat quotes, something unusual -- not ordinary. They don't travel all over the world eating terrible airline food just to see somebody win -- they want a story, and it had better be bloody good. Orser hurt, too Orser has had his share of injuries -- the most recent of which, a car-rolling on the 400 Highway on the way back from Skate Canada -- gave him dislocated discs and assorted other injuries for which he's still, today, visiting a doctor. No big deal, right? Everybody knows Brian Orser will just brush himself off and go back to work. No story there. A few questions came to mind upon noticing all this media ignorance a couple of days ago. So I asked Orser. It nagged Did all that media ignorance bother him last week? "Yeah," he said from his parents' home outside Penetanguishene. "I noticed it all week, but what can you do? I didn't think about it when I was skating, but it was on my mind all during the seek." What about Ms. Wilkes's lofty pronouncement that she'd have voted for Pockar? "That really wasn't the right time or place to say a thing like that. It really wasn't fair." So what is Brian Orser going to have to do to make people realize that Brian Orser is the champion? That Brian Orser is the story? "Just keep beating 'em, I guess." Meanwhile, we'lbjust keep wrapping our fish. * QUOTE OF THE WEEK: "Brian Orser is the 1982 Canadian Mens' Figure Skating Champion." -- slipped in by a CTV announcer sometime during taping, Saturday, Jan. 30, 1982. _/ Elmvale house leaguers come back on Midland visitors for 4-3 victory A visiting Midland Peewee house league team went off to a flying start against the Elmvale team on Jan. 23. The home defence were not spreading out enough in order to help the rookie goalie, Donald Linssen. Midland had three goals in the first period and seemed all over Elmvale till Grant King circled behind the Midland net, passed to Larry Fleming, and Russell Lauzon scored into the side of the net. Fleming was on top form, forced the op- position, and set up many good plays. Kevin Coulter passed to Tim Jacobs, and Rene Ovellett tickled the puck behind the goalie. At the end of the second period, King and Coulter moved around in a muddled defence and Rene had his second point to tie the game. The play went from end to end in the third period but Dwayne Espey combined with Lauzon for the winning goal. A couple of hours later, Elmvale played the Coldwater Peewee house team. The visitors had the first easy goal in at 7:14. This seemed to be what Elmvale needed to get them- selves organized. Espey scored two beautiful goals, assisted by Chris Conn and Lauzon in the first, and Conn and Steve Eccles in the second. After. the teams changed ends, Jacobs connected with the puck at centre, flew up the ice, deked the Cold- water goalie, who came far out of the net: Jacobs put his team further ahead again on a breakaway at 7:21. The visitors scored a shorthanded goal in the third period. Elmvale didn't give up and_ eventually Oullette found a loose puck, in a scramble and Coulter scored.
