Don & Ruby Hocken Malibus The Midland Commodore Hotel Malibus never expected to be world-beaters when they started their 1981/82 Simcoe County Ladies' Recreational Volleyball League season. They've always been painfully aware that their strong points have been outnumbered by their weaknesses, and they suffered enough thumping to land in sixth of eight positions when the season finally wound down. No, they never expected to be world-beaters. Or, for that matter, Simcoe County-beaters. But last Wednesday in Barrie, the Malibus almost did just that. For the first time since their inception, the Malibus brought home the finalists' trophy after taking the league's best right to the wire in the championships, held come close last Wednesday at Barrie's Innisdale Collegiate. The Malibus, who fought their way into the final threesome with some high-calibre playoff savvy, bounced back to knock off Cookstown 12-15, 15-13, 15-8 in last week's semi-final and earn the right to meet Barrie, the league's top-ranked club. After a 3-15 drubbing in the opener, the Malibus came alive for a 15-13 upsel before being quelled with a 6-15 loss in the decider. The Midland squad, coached by Carol Finlayson, included Louise Clute, Anne Donald, Louise Douglas, Jean Goodrow, Carol Lavin, Joan Lavin, Karen Light, Darlene Paul and Honore White. Carol Lavin has also served as the league convenor the past two seasons. " BUY ONE GET ONE MARCH 25-26 Here's your chance to treat a friend to something special.
