SATURDAY SEMINAR Texan comes to talk recreation by Adrienne Graham Gardner Recreation commi- ttee members from across Tiny Township gathered in Perkinsfield last Saturday for a recreation seminar sponsored by council. Recreation commi- ttees from Tiny hamlets as well as the township Parks and Recreation Board were represented al the day-long session, which was also attended by all members of council. Guest speaker at the workshop was Howard Lockhart, recreation director al Souix Lookout. Lockhart is a Texan by birth, and came to municipal recreation after successful careers in basketball and academia. Lockhart called himself a "fun-gineer"' and described "recreation as One of the most valuable professions today."' The benefits of recreation are many, according to Lockhart-- health and fitness, in- creased jobs for the economy, the promotion of family values and the removal- of social barriers. Lockhart stressed the "user pay concept"', the recognition of skills available in a com- munity, and the in- tegration of programs to mix groups and ages as well as the handicapped in activities. After outlining his view of the roles of committees, council and the recreation director Ita unicipality, Lockhart narrowed his scope to the "Tiny View." Advantages' for recreation in Tiny in- clude the fact that groundwork has_ been done, and that no deficit-producing facility presently exists. Lockhart "got excited just thinking about the geography" in Tiny, winter potential, the large summer increase in population and inter- community rivalry. "T had a hard time thinking of any disad- vantages," said Lockhart. Future Recreation development in Tiny should centre around a multiple facility, which would include a theatre, pool, arena, gym, studios, running track and year-round tennis courts projected Lockhart. He also suggested the controlling of access to some large beach areas with central parking lots and shuttle bus service for day users of the beach. Funding for these projects and_ the possibility of revenue from recreation were emphasized by the speaker. The Saturday session was sponsored' by council in appreciation of the contribution of committee members to recreation in Tiny. Hon.
