The waiting game Ii is expected the Ontario Police Com- mission will study a request by the Town of Midland to reduce the town's police force's civilian staff by one radio operator. Earlier this year the town announced plans io cut staff in a number of municipal departments in order to keep this year's budget in line with last year's. Plans called for cutting one policeman from the force. That was later changed to one CRO. Since then the town was informed, under terms set out in the Police Act, it is the OPC that must grant permission to reduce a police force's strength. It has been learned the OPC will study the consequences of laying off a CRO before it makes any final' decision on the town's request to reduce staff from the police department. : As for cuts in other municipal departments, to date only two firefighters in Midland have been laid' off while three girls in the main office were given their walking paper at town hall. One of the employees was let go per- manently while the other two are being employed now on a part-time basis. There were no cuts in the engineering and technical department while one maintenance worker at the public works depot was fired earlier this year and another resigned. OPC plans to study Midland's request The firing was topic of discussion at mediation meeting this week at the Highland Motel between the town and Officials from the Ontario Public Service Union.
