Happy trails to you Children will be happy to see the end of school next week, but after a few days of vacation, they begin roaming the house with nothing to do. After being inside at school all year, children should be outside en- joying the fresh air and sunshine, but soon tire of riding their bikes and playing in the sand. Kids need a variety of activities to keep them amused in the summer months. Camp Wen- dakay is one idea for these active children. Camp Wendakay is an in-town vacation for little people ages 5-10. The first week of this playground begins June 28 and continues for six weeks. The playground includes swimming lessons and recreational swimming in the Y pool, crafts, games and an out-of-town trip every week. All of these ac- tivities will help keep children from becoming bored in the summer. You can let your children in on the great summer fun by registering at the Midland YMCA, However, ther's only one week remaining to register for the first week of activities. Children may still register for the later weeks at a later date, but there is a limited registration number and the weeks are reaching their maximum number now. It's the perfect op- portunity to get so much fun for so little cost. For further in- formation call Nancy Hook at 526-7828. Sports shows On Wednesday, June'9, this newspaper published a sports flashback provided to us by Helen Miriam Gladstone of Midland. flashback Here's another one of her flashbacks . . . it the Victoria Harbour Baseball Team managed by G. J. Shaw, her father. Shaw was manager of the CPR elevator at Port McNicoll. This picture was '"'snap- ped"' back in the 1920s. Canoe trips -- take an excursion into a marsh! Out-of-town lawn bowlers captured the top three prizes during Monday's "'ladies event" at Midland Lawn Bowling Club despite the fact the local gals entered six of the 14 rinks that took part in the annual trebles event. Fears had been expressed the classic might not be held after several days of rain. But enough of the green was dry to stage the competition under almost ideal conditions . . . Juniors losing heart Midland Colour Works Spectrums of the South- Simcoe Junior Baseball League couldn't manage One run in Collingwood, Sunday afternoon. However the 2-0 shut-out really wasn't the story. The club from the Gateway to the 30,000 Islands here in the Heart of Huronia could only inspire nine players to make the trip to Collingwood. Both of Midland's top two hurlers, Ernie Desroches and Dan Lethbridge didn't make the irip. So i! was up to Randy Lalonde to go the distance. He played a bit of last week's game against Owen Sound, but Sunday's Midland-Collingwood game was the first time he had the hill all to himself for six innifigs. Lalonde managed to strike out four Collingwood players during the game but ii just wasn't enough {o keep his club in contention. As a result of Sunday's thrashing, Midland's record now slands at four wins, six thumpings and a tie. Big innings for Collingwood were the bottom of the second and the bottom of the sixth when they plated single runs in each stanza. There's a good chance when Midland players meet tonight for a regular practice session, coaches for the club will raise a few questions including, why only nine players journeyed to Collingwood on Sunday when the club has 2 players on its rosters? Stay tuned folks for the results of that conclave.
