© Contact Community information 526-9333 9 a.m.-5 p.m, by Irene Quesnelle, Administrator Summer is here and our communily is a hive of activity. Our Centre is busy preparing for Midland's Annual Sidewalk Sale. Pam Carruthers, Cathy Levack and Shari Howell will be manning our tables this year. The girls will have lots of information to pass out, buttons and cookbooks for sale. Be sure 1o stop by and say hello, to Contact and the Volunteer Bureau. We've had a couple of changes here al Contact recently. Barb Emerson, Contact's secretary for six anda half years is moving to Justice, economy concerns Queen's Park by Al McLean, MPP Simcoe East Over the past few days justice issues and the management of our economy have been the chief topics on the Order Paper at the Provincial Legislature. Presently before the House, are proposals to amend the seai belt law thai will require all children under five io be in safety approved car seats when travelling in the family auto. In the Justice Committee, members of all three Parties are examining the policies and spending of the Provincial Secretary for Justice and ihe Solicitor General's ministry. This process is called estimates and provides MPP's with a chance to have a direct influence on the running of governmen! departments. The Secretary for Justice ad- ministers a relatively small Ministry. The role of this Ministry is to co- ordinaie the activity of the Province in all judicial issues in order to reduce duplication of activity and over- spending. The Solicitor General has a variety of duties, bui his chief responsibilities are the management of the Province's police force and the Ontario Fire Marshall's office. Las' week, the Natural Resources Committee of the Legislature began its 30-hour examination of the Provincial budget. The Treasurer's proposals have received a loi of analysis in the media and among members of the Ontario Progressive Conservaiive caucus. Personally, I have found one or two points in the budget that I cannot whole-heartedly agree with and I have relayed my concerns, along with those I have received from the riding of Simcoe East, to the Treasurer. Bad times hurt governments just as much as 'hey hurt industry or the private individual. With demand for government services becoming greater, the Treasurer is finding that traditional sources of revenue were drying up. Barrie and will no longer be the cheerful voice answering our telephone in the morning. We're going to miss Barb, but wish her and her family much happiness as they settle in a new community and in their new home. Shari Emerson and Mike Howell were married on July 2. Shari is one of our staff at the Volunteer Bureau. After a honeymoon at Niagara Falls they have settled in an apart- ment on Elizabeth Street. We wish Mike and Shari much. happiness and a long life together.
