Add books and 'burgs to the 3Rs by Carol Dimock The staff at Ecole Secondaire Le Caron has decided to get students hooked on reading. A 20 minute reading period will be established after the morning announcements each day, when everyone in the school will stop working and read. Yeachers, office staff, custodians and visitors as well as students will be encouraged to pick up a book or magazine and discover the pleasure of reading. "Most students read only when they have to, for school work. They watch T.V. or play video games instead,' says Denis Chartrand, a teacher at Le Caron. "Other schools have tried this and many feel it is the high point of the day." The school will provide books, newspapers and magazines, and the students may bring their own reading material. Students may read anything they want, says Chartrand, as long as it isn't school work. "Some may begin with comic books, but they'll get the idea soon,"' he said. "People will think they'll be reading all French books, but they can read in Russian as far as I'm concerned." Meanwhile students of Ecole Secondaire Le Caron will be able to order burgers and fries to go for lunch instead of cafeteria food. Nick Boudouris of the Dock Lunch will take orders from the school in the morning, and the food will be delivered piping hot in time for lunch. This arrangement was made when problems arose with the catering contract with the school board. Beaver Foods has the job of. providing cafeteria service to schools in the area, but refuses to serve Le Caron because the number of students is too small. Nick Boudouris is considering a proposal to install full cafeteria equipment at the school and set up food service there, but first the school board wants a proposal submitted in detail.
