= PLEASE CALLUS Story or picture idea: 549-2012 8 a.m.to 5p.m. "Information is the hallmark of democracy" Roll up your sleeves for agood cause A WEEK FROM today the Huronia Branch of the Red Cross will be holding its annual fall blood donors' clinic in Midland. The clinic's goal is 350 pints of blood. From 1:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 15, the Red Cross will be looking for you to "'give the gift of life."' The person who receives your blood will be healthier for it. As a matter of fact every six seconds someone in Canada is helped by a blood donation. Plan to share your health again by attending next Wednesday's blood donors' clinic in Midland. Roll up your sleeves for a good cause. It takes less than an hour of your time to give blood . . . so please plan to attend the clinic. It could mean the difference between a life and death. We have arole to play in the community | THERE ARE NEARLY 10,000 "hometown" newspapers in North America reaching more than 32 million homes. '"'Hometown" newspapers, this one included, are a bulwark of independent thought. Truly without them there would be no freedom of the press. It is safe to say, there would be no record of community life, no reporting of important community functions and no expression of editorial ideas and opinions. ; It is our opinion that local '"'chometown" newspapers no matter what their size do a big job. There are gigantic costs involved in reaching a sizeable audience, yet "hometown"' newspapers, this one included are prepared to invest not only money but time and talent to make certain you, our valued readers, are informed of the current events as they unfold each day. Don't look now but we ve been had! WELL DEAR tax-payers we are about to be stung again. As a "diplomatic courtesy" well-heeled international bankers attending this week's International Monetary Fund meeting in Metro will be allowed to buy their booze at half-price at Toronto LCBO stores. It's been suggested while the bankers are in the "Big Smoke"' they'll drop about $20 million. So why all the fuss? The difference between the reduced price of hooch and the full price will be absorbed by the federal government---namely US! Each year we appeal to Ontarians for this assistance through the good service of the media. Your support in the past has been greatly ap- preciated in communicating UNICEF's need for volunteer help to your readers - and without this help UNICEF projects to assist millions of the most underprivileged children around the world would not achieve even a modicum of success. The funds raised annually by UNICEF volunteers support projects in 111 countries in the field of basic services, providing over 500 million children with improved health, education, nutrition, safe water and sanitation. I would like to convey our sincere thanks for your continued interest and we look forward to working with volunteers throughout Ontario for the children of the world. If any of your readers would like to learn more about the volunteer op- portunites available with UNICEF, they should call: (416) 487-4153.
