Big plans (and price tag) in the works by Murray Moore If the Midland Planning Boards plan of development for downtown Midland for the next five years is followed as_ presently proposed, $1,245,240 will be spent. _ Midland taxpayers would pay about $415,000 of that amount. Midland taxpayers to date have paid, or have agreed to pay, one-third of the $416,000 cost of buying three properties in downtown Midland. the province is covering the remaining two- third's cost. The town has acquired the Perrin property east of King Street for use as a parking lot: total cost, $56,000. An agreement of purchase and sale has been signed for the Edward's Village Square parking lot east of King Street, adjacent to the Perrin property, with the deal to close, according to Alderman Joe Blake, "very soon,' within a month, when the province's share is received by the town: total cost, $210,000. An agreement of purchase and sale has been signed for the Duggan property on Bayshore Drive, to close by the end of October, also conditional on receipt by the town of the province's share: total cost, $150,000. The planning board is also still interested in buying the -Eleithea Shoppe on King Street or a_ neighbouring business, in order to construct a walkway connecting King Street and -the municipal parking lot to the east. A road will be put through the Duggan property some time in the future. Part of the agreement of .purchase and _-- sale is an agreement that the property need not be vacated until next May. When the CP Express lease on nearby Bay Street property expires, "the Brewer's Retail might locate there. CP' Express is moving to the wharehouse on the town dock. Brewer's Retail's lease at its present location expires in the near future. Thé town can get up to $450,000 of provincial money to improve downtown Midland, if the town adopts a redevelopment plan by Oct. 30. Further provincial money would be contingent on future agreements between the town and the province.
