The Niekro borthers - Phill of Atlanta, and Joe of Houston - have gotten their seasons straightened out...Joe won on Sunday over Cincinnati to push his record to 9-8 this year, and Phil, the elder of the two knuckleballers, won Saturday over San Diego to go 6-6 on the year...It was Phil's fourth consecutive won...Blue Jays now have four players bat- ting over .300, and all are regulars...The four are; Barry Bonnell (.309), Willie Upshaw (.305), Damaso Garcia (.304), and Lloyd Moseby (.303)...Alfredo Griffin has his bat- ting average up to the .260 mark, and is now tied for the A.L. lead in triples with eight with Dave Winfield of the Yanks...New leader in the A.L. batting race is Boston's Wade Boggs, and you've heard his name here before...He was hitting .374 on Sunday...National] League leader is Mike Easler of Pittsburgh, but he usually doesn't get enough at hats to qualify for the title by the end of the season...Jack Morris of Detroit has overtaken Dave Stieb for the strikeout lead in the American League, 133 to 122...It's really a toss-up for the N.L. Most Valuable Player...Last year's winner, Dale Murphy of Atlanta is hitting about .310 with 21 homers and 71 rbi's, but Montreal's Andre Dawson is hitting .320 and leads the league in homers (23) and rbi's (80)...The key might be this - Montreal is struggling along in fourth place in the N.L. East, while the Braves are leading the West by six-and-a-half games, and have the best record in baseball...L.A. Dodgers are really starting to fade in the N.L. West, as they have had a lot of trouble both in scoring runs and on defence...They'll probably be back in the race in September...Chicago White Sox are winning the A.L. West by defeault...They are the only team with a winning record 53-48, and lead K.C. Royals by 3% games...Jays' attendance went over the million mark last Tuesday against the Chisox, and they'll break the season record of 1.7 million if they keep playing well...Jose De Leon of the Pirates pitched a nine-innings on Sunday...Paul Householder of Cincinnati is the winner of the Name Game this week...He's an outfielder, and not yet a '"'household name"...See ya later! and your Elmvale Lance 322-1871 family garage 61,62 5 Family Lawn & Bake Sale, Aug. 6, 10 a.m. County Road 23 Vasey. After finishing deadlocked in first place with Midland Therrien's after the nine-game schedule, it all came down to a sudden-death game on Monday night at Woodland Park in Midland. Not to be denied, Sturgeon Bay outlasted Midland 21-18 in a marathon game that saw lots of walks and hits, but not a single homerun. Joyce Puddicombe of Sturgeon Bay had the big blast of the ball game when she unloaded a triple with the bases loaded. Winning pitcher in the game was' Dianne Langley, while Gail Hamelin took the loss. For winning the regular season title, Marge McCarnen presented the Sturgeon Bay girls with a plaque. This game decided not only the first and second place teams, but also the playoff matchings.
