A beer garden ran from early afternoon to early evening and attracted a large number of people. The Rotary Club made enough money to cover its expenses in helping pay for the construction of the fitness trail; of buying the boat, motor and trailer worth together $16,400, which it raffled; and buying, for $6,000, a $100,000 insurance policy for the tagged, largemouth bass. The tagged, largemouth bass was not turned in by the deadline of 6 p.m. on Sunday, and so the $100,000 prize went unclaimed. The fish was put into the bay on July 22. A rumour has_ been going around that an American staying in one of Penetanguishene's camping parks caught a largemouth bass with a yellow tag on it, but returned it to the water, not being aware of its significance. Representatives of Midland, Penetanguishene co-operate Joint committee to present The councils of Midland and _ Pen- tanguishene last week agreed to dissolve the ad hoc committee created to get an Industrial Labour Assistance Program (ILAP) designation for this area. A joint steering committee has been created to promote the two towns, and to deal with companies which express an interest in establishing, or ex- panding to this area. Midland hosted the meeting of the .two councils The general feeling at the meeting, described later by representatives of both towns, was a spirit of co-operation. This month the membership of the steering committee will be decided. The clerks of both towns will be joined by a member from each council, and a member appointed by each town, for a total of six members. Mayor Ron Bellisle said that the unnamed committee encompa- ssed only the two local urban municipalities. Port MecNicoll and Victoria Harbour have expressed an _ interest, but the feeling of the two councils is that a six member committee is large enough, he said. The committee won't have a budget until next year. The councils do not plan to hire a planning commissioner to represent the two towns, or to hire any other employee. Midland Reeve Bev Day said that the two councils are starting on a small scale. The steering committee "'won't have that much power to start with." The ad hoc ILAP committee has $15,000 in its budget, half of what it had in the beginning, two years ago. Half of the $15,000 will be returned to the two towns, which had contributed jointly $10,000. ILAP designation by the federal government would have meant grants and loans would have been available to businesses which opened, or expanded to, the two towns. The two towns' application was reportedly high on the list of applications, but Cabinet issuing the federal stopped designations. The steering com- mittee, once established, will produce terms. of reference which will be presented to _ both councils for their comments and ap- proval. Mayor Bellisle gave industrial promotion as the purpose of the joint committee. "We're not here to subsidize trips to Europe," he added. Businesses which ex- press an interest in moving to, or expanding 1 te either Penetanguishene or Midland will meet the committee which will promote the two towns as one unit. Midland Alderman Dan Herbert, in a prepared' statement during the joint council meeting, noted that '*Our committee recognizes the need for a better line of com- munication or liaison between Penetangui- shene and Midland, not only in the area of in- dustrial development, but in many other areas as well, such as police protection, fire protection, etc. and also eContinued from Page 1 Labatt's present on Sunday were impressed by the success of the day, Park said. However this trend has not been developing at janyplarming rate." Alderman Herbert is the chairman of Midland's __ recently-c- reated industrial development liaison conimittee. The so-called ILAP committee was an ad hoe committee of the Midland-Penetangui- shene Joint Manpower Assessment and Planning Committee. 3) fe SSS SSS SS SS SSS SSS See ee ey 'Super Weekday Special' !
