Garner praises coach by RON JOHNSON Midland Centennials Junior C hockey team is about to start the 1983-84 season, openihg up their training camp this coming Sunday night at Centennial arena. The practice is open to all hockey players of junior age (born in 1963 or later) who live or played hockey in and around Midland. Team owner Tom Garner claims that all 19 spots on the roster will be open to com- petition, although he has already signed three players to Cents contracts for the season. The three signees are centre Tim McIntyre, who played last year with the Essa 80's, rightwinger Ken Rinnard, who has ex- perience with the Georgian College hockey team, and defenceman Brad Copeland, who played with the University of Waterloo team with the Cents in the past. Returning to the fold as Cents from last year's squad are goalies Dwayne Latondress and Chris Lemieux, defenders Al Pumputis, Mike Leo, Dave Wright, and Larry McMann, and fowards Brian Cadeau, Al Whidden, Shawn Davy, John Walter, and Rick Rever. These players, plus the three newcomers, form a solid nucleus for a very competitive Centennial team in the upcoming season. Perhaps the biggest improvement in the Midland Centennials this season will not appear On the ice at all during the games. The biggest improvement will likely be in the coach himself. With a year of Junior C experience under his belt, coach Ross McConnell will be better able to assert his own style and personality on owner to run the team as he sees fit. "Ross MConnell is the best thing to happen to junior hockey in Midland in a long, long time. If his enthusiasm and desire to excel can rub off on his players, there won't be a team in Ontario that will beat them. He's a fantastic coach,"' explained Tom Garner. Last year was a learning year for McConnell behind the Cents' bench, but this year will be a real "'coming out"' for' th the young coach, Garner has gone out and gotten three players that Ross McConnell desired to fill out the roster, now it will be up to him to whip the team into competitive shape. Doug Fox will once again be back as the Midland Centennials' general manager, and will handle most of the publicity for the team.
