EDHS ANGELA WRIGHT and LINDA TUCKER Week of Feb. 20 to Feb. 25 Highlights of ac- tivities at Elmvale District High School this week were: Quebec trip, Girls Volleyball, Effective Speaking and Winter Carnival. On Feb. 15 a group of students took a bus to St. Donat, Quebec. This trip was not a vacation but a trip for students to learn about the French Culture. This trip was called a French Immersion where groups Of students from Report: different schools in Simcoe County such as Collingwood, Barrie Central and Stayner' experienced living in a French City. The students were involved in many different ac- tivities during the five days Of their trip. These activities cOnsisted of skiing, snOwshoeing on a survival course and bon fires, broomball, tobogganning, tugs-of- war, just to mention a few of the activities that were involved in this immersion. Throughout : the whole trip the students spoke French-- and met people with a French background. Jim Nesbitt won a silver medal for skiing. The students found the trip to be interesting and¢ fun. This month had been an exciting month for the Girls Volleyball teams at E.D.H.S. The teams have _ been cOmpeting against Orillia, Penetang, Park Street and other teams in their division. All the teams may be going to the Zone Playoffs. The senior and junior teams will be playing a semi-final match and then they advance to the finals. Midget girls are in first place and with 'Speaking only being defeated three times in their season they will get a bye to the finals. If the teams win the Zone Playoffs. they will proceed to the Georgian Bay finals on Saturday March 3, 1984. One of Our most im- portant events of this week was the Effective Contest sponsored by the Elmvale Lions Club. Lisa Ritchie won the girls competition and she spoke 0n Changes. Todd Wood won the boys competition and he spoke On Smoking. Tammy Hocken was also a winner in her division and she spoke on Elvis Presley. Lisa and Todd will now advance to the public school zone competition. Last year Lisa Ritchie went to the Multiple District Competition in Quebec. She competed aginst girls who won their high school competition.She came in third of this competition and she may have another chance along with Todd Wood to be a winner in the Multiple District Competition held in Windsor this year. Tomorrow a _ special event will be Occurring at our school which is annually held every year. It is the Winter Carnival. Since the weather L Son." t cooperating for winter events the Carnival will be held inside with a few exceptions like skating and broomball which will be held at the arena. There will be such events as volleyball tournaments, video movies, tugs-of-war in the halls and computer games. The students will be evenly divided up by home room or houses and will compete for prizes Or house points. This should be a day full of excitement to end our exciting ac- tivities of this week.
