'I would like tothank you friends for coming out and helping us celebrate in building our new house of God." : A Thurber Carnival receives positive audience reaction MARY HASKILL th sae pleasant evening...enjoyabl- e...great fun!" was the audience reaction to Huronia Players' A Thurber Carnival last weekend. Director Janet French is to be congratulated on the skill with which she interpreted 'Thurber whose style is largely unclassifiable--simply Thurber. His humour has been described as pleasingly gentle, sometimes non-existent, as he tqgok the everyday dilemma, enlarged it and put it in focus. A Thurber Carnival was staged on raised platforms in front of the regular MSS _ stage making for an intimate relationship between actors and audience. Sealing arrangements provided an excellent view of the action from every angle. The problem _ of concealing the necessary Prompter was cleverly solved. Dolly Heasman merely donned a wide-brimmed straw hat laden with blossoms and became a part of the flower garden at the corner of the stage. The Carnival spirit was established at the beginning with an energetic Word Dance. Punch lines' from Thurber cartoons provided enough "'groaners" to make one the life of the party for months to come. One treat followed another as the auditorium filled with smiles. Although audiences were disappointingly small they were appreciative as Thurber's unique but oh so recognizable people came to life. A Thurber Carnival provided a showcase for Players' talent. Many of the performers ap- peared in several roles. Stephen Hartnell, Barry Daley, Eric Rothwell, John Scott and Brian Cummings gave their usual fine in- terpretations that playgoers have come to expect. Galen Vyce was an assured and commentator. John Kee and Larry Murphy, always dependable backstage, showed a great deal of promise in front of the footlights and can be expected to go on to even larger roles. Energetic newcomer John Davies proved a versatile and skilled addition to the local theatre scene. Randy Brown who gave an outstanding performance in two major roles, was erroneously reported as a first-timer with the Players. Not so. Many come to live and work in people remembered' Elmvale. She him in "6 Rms. Riv. graduated from Vu.' and as the astute Sheridan College with a British Bobby in Mid- summer Mink. 'That was four years ago and it is hoped we won't have to wait that long to see him on stage again. So "much for ithe Thurber men. I listed them first as Thurber would have done! Now for the Thurber women-- Judy Carr, Monica Kee, Anne LePan, Lindsey Martin, Nora Thomp- son, Joanne Van Luven, May Williams and Rochelle French. In such an overall excellent cast, it is difficult to single out any one performance but most folks thoroughly enjoyed Judy Carr's "shrewish wife" roles. Judy is a St. Thomas girl who has Drama Major. Rochelle French is growing up with Huronia Players. Four years ago she played Baby June in Gypsy. A Thurber Carnival will play again next weekend, May 18, 19, at Midland Secondary School. 'Then the cur- tain will come down on the 83-84 season for Huronia Players. It has been a good season. In the President's message on the program, May Williams notes that is also the end of 21 years of live theatre in this area by Huronia Players. "...in the fall,"' she went on, '"'music-- lights--curtain will make the magic start all over again."' e Audits experience. Patrick A. Blake, B. Math., C.A. (705) 526-9419 ANNOUNCEMENT Patrick A.
