Penetanguishene IGA Tykes split a pair of games over the past week as they dropped their first game to Midland by a_ 13-6 margin, bul won a thriller on Thursday as they downed Barrie by a 6-2 score in perhaps their best game of the season. In the Midland- Penetang match-up, the IGA Tykes had dif- ficulty on the pitching mound as they gave up 13 walks in the six in- nings played. Tim Mason took the loss for Penetang and even a_ strong relief performance by Jeff Duquette wasn't enough to get the boys back in the game as their bats failed them at crucial limes in the contest. Both Paul Desrochers and Steven Dubeau played well offensively as each scored two runs in the game. It was Midland's Chris Leonard who starred in a relief pit- ching role as he held Penetang to just two hits in the two innings he pitched. On Thursday, June 14, IGA Tykes played their bes! baseball of the season, both offensively and defensively and were deservedly rewarded with the win. It was milestone in the IGA Tykes brief history as they finally defeated Barrie for the first time in two years of York- Simcoe play. An excellent pitching performance by Jeff Duquette (his first starling assignment of the season) the win as he struck out eight batters and allowed only four walks in the full seven innings he pitched. Duquette not only did it with his pitching, but his glove hurt Barrie as well as he accounted for six pul-outs which were hit directly at him. The game as a true pitcher's duel with no runs being scored in the first {wo innings of play. It wasn't until the top of the third before Barrie managed to score {wo runs. The IGA 'Tykes did have their chances, but stranded six runs in the first three innings. With the lead, Barrie played well defensively and didn't commit any errors even on some sharply hit balls to the in-field. However, the defensive gem of the game went to Penetang's Steven Dubeau in the fourth when he went high into the air to snag a fly ball hit to his backhand. This catch inspired his teammates and the momentum began to shift. The score remained 2- 0 for Barrie until the bottom of the fifth when the IGA Tykes scored two of their own to tie the game. The inning began with a walk to newly acquired first-baseman, Grant Patterson, who along with Raymond Dupuis and _ Laval Dubeau, were all playing in their first game. hilighted Tim Mason then followed with a single to advance the runner. It was at this point that Barrie's pitching hegan to falter as they gave up two econseculive walks, the second of which allowed Penetang to score its first run. Another walk to Dupuis gave the IGA Tykes its second run which tied the game. Duquette quickly went to work again in the top of the sixth and faced only four Barrie balters to retire the side. The local squad then began their charge in the bottom of the sixth. Tim Mason, whose bat had been very quiet over the past few games, came up with the offensive hil of the game, a line shot triple jus! over first -base which enabled the IGA Tykes to score three go- ahead runs. The next two players were pul out in order, but it was Steven Dubeau who hit a strong single to score Mason from third for their sixth run and fourth of the inning. The inning ended with both Dubeau and Dupuis on base, but Penetang had a very comfortable (6-2 lead. It was Duquette's strong pitching in the top of the seventh which stalled Barrie's bid to play catch-up baseball. He faced only four batters to retire the side. Patterson managed to end the game on a fine running catch of a short fly ball in foul territory along the first base line. All in all, the win was a major ac- complishment for the local boys who put together their best team effort to date. IGA 'Tykes' next outing is Saturday, June 23 when they play host to the Bolton Tykes at McGuire Park with a 10 a.m. starting time. Once again, the public is invited to come out and watch some en- tertaining baseball.
