Dear Prime Minister Turner, I have a concern that haunts me constantly. After all these years of using English as the working language in most of Canada, by millions of Ganadians, how would you propose to protect and ensure the rights of these people should all provinces become officially bilingual? How would you. guarantee that people will not be discriminated against or at a disadvantage re the civil service, military or other occupations if they are not bilingual? Would you please reply. Dear Mr. Broadbent, As leader of the New Democratic Party and considering your view and opinion that all A historic event Dear Editor: As a local resident, it has been most gratifying to see how volunteers from Midland and surrounding communities have rallied behind the visit of Pope John Paul II on Sept. 15. Their hard work and dedication has been a source of envy for papal visit organizers around Ontario and well beyond. During a _ recent visit to Midland, His Emminence Emmett Cardinal Carter recalled the many cities and towns in Ontario clammering to have the Pope in their community on first word of a Canadian papal tour. The fact that Midland became one of a chosen few sites in the province is an honour and distinc- tion that may never be equalled. Still, there are those among us who would have us believe that the papal visit to Midland is an event to be avoided; that it is preferable to stand in the background until the whole affair blows over. And yet we've seen evidence around the world Aug. 29 Midland Nursery. However, it would seem that some of us are not prepared to travel a few miles and mingle with the crowds here to see His Holiness in our own back yard. I do not personally believe this attitude reflects the community's sentiment. As one resident, I give Midland credit for a lot more gumption and back bone. The Huronia Papal Visit is not just a religious occasion. It is an historic event the likes of which many of us may never witness again in our life time. I happen to be protestant but that doesn't mean I am looking ahead to the papal visit with less anticipation or enthusiasm than my catholic neighbour. To those among us who have so far refused to jump on the bandwagon, I can only assure you that you are missing a very memorable ride.
