City Heat by TERRY DUPUIS It isn't often that two box-office giants like Clint Eastwood and Burt Reynolds are teamed together in the same movie. Both stars have their own following with the public, which has certain ideas about what a_ Burt Reynolds picture or what a Clint Eastwood picture should be. The notion of a Reynolds-Eastwood pic- ture, one movie showcasing both superstars is an intriguing idea. It is almost a guaranteed success at the box-office, to my way of thinking, regardless of quality. The new movie I am referring to is called City Heat. It is a gangster-cops and robbers-private eye yarn set during the period of the early 1930's, shortly before the repeal of Prohibition. The story is ideally suited to capitalize on the talents and sereen images of its two stars. Eastwood has enjoyed a vogue for many years as a tough cop in quite a few big city crime dramas, and this is the same type of role we find him playing in City Heat. Reynolds is best known for his good old boy movies like Smokey and the Sandit, but he has also played detective in a number of private eye yarsn like Shamus and Hustle, and his role in City Heat casts him in another role as a gumshoe. Yet while this new movie allows its two stars to play roles which they feel comfortable with, at the same time it allows to poke a bit of fun at their basic screen characters. City Heat, vou see, is not a movie which we are meant to take very seriously. It uses a basically light-hearted approach, which works very well most of the {ime. After all, Reynolds has proven himself in recent years as a light comedian, and even Eastwood has previously made a number of comedies. In City Heat Burt Reynolds plays a private eye in early 30's Kansas City two box-office giants spin a good P.I. yarn who has a two-man detective agency with another gumshoe played by Richard Roundtree. But Reynolds' partner gets involved with the gambling and criminal element of the cily, and he ends up being killed. But by this time he has-involved Reynolds into a very dangerous and messy situation. Reynolds has a sort of love- hate relationship with tough cop Eastwood. These two crime-fighters are very competitive in nature, and when events force them to work together against the underworld, the alliance is a very uneasy one. The good supporting cast has Rip Torn and Tony LoBianco as two rival gang leaders of the underworld who are also very competitive. Jane Alexander is very amusing as Reynolds' devoted secretary, and Madeline Kahn is as_ riotously dependable as always in the role of Reynolds' girlfriend. But it is the teamwork of Burt Reynolds and Clint Eastwood which given City Heat its main impetus. This light-hearted ' caper is one of the screen's best since Paul Newman and Robert Redford teamed up for The Sting, a movie which was set during this same period. One of the funniest scenes in the movie occurs early on in the picture, when Reynolds and several hoods are slugging it out in a latenight diner. Reynolds seems to be getting the worst of it, while nonchalantly at his coffee. Then one of the brawlers accidentally Eastwood's coffee. The camera then pans in on Eastwood's weatherbeaten face, as his eye twitches slightly. Then the audience laughs, because it knows whats going to happen. City Heat is light and breezy all the way, and a good antidote to the overly violent and sombre big city crime movies which have been produced in Commodore on top of heap a Commodore's 8-3 win ever last place G Wilicers and Hindson's 8-2 victory over Duquette's gave Commodore sole possession of first place in the Penetang Rec Hockey league action on Sunday. Commodore's Garry Lizotte, Bob Monteith and Bob Duquette each slammed home a pair, while Bill Beauchamp and Brian Duquette connected for single goals. Frank Hall provided the only score for G Wilicers. Ken Cowan had the hat-trick for Hindson's to lead -the team to victory. Notching singles were Greg St. Amant, Steve _St. Amant, Terry Spiker, Dwayne Story and Mark Decourcey. Karl Cowan and Garry Preston supplied the two goals for Duquette's. Therrien's had no problem disposing of Pollard's 8-1, in the final game of the evening. Beating Pollard's goalie twice each were Dan O'Hara, Chris Anderson and Keith St. Amant. Credited with single goals were Bill Arbour and Dave Lefaive. The lone Pollard's goal came off the stick of James Dupuis. Midland Minor Atoms win twice in week Gervan and Davy Minor Hockey League Atoms had a_ very successful weekend defeating Creemore 4-0 in Midland and beating Penetang 7-1 in Penetang. - In the game against Creemore, Kevin Ansley got the shutout for.
